Brisbane, Gold Coast BoM forecasts heavy rainfall, winds; NSW floods worsen; Lismore ADF vehicle crash injures multiple


A major flood warning has been issued for the Clarence River at Grafton, Ulmarra and Maclean as heavy rainfall from ex-tropical cyclone Alfred swells the river’s catchment, with more rain forecast for today.

“Moderate flooding is occurring at Grafton, where major flooding is possible from late Sunday morning,” the Bureau of Meteorology said.

“Moderate flooding is expected at Ulmarra on Sunday morning and is possible at Maclean overnight Sunday into Monday.”

At Grafton this morning, the Clarence River was at 4.23 metres and rising, with moderate flooding, and the weather bureau warns it could reach the major flood level of 5.4 metres by late morning.

At Ulmarra, the river is currently at 2.22 metres with minor flooding, but it could swell to 4.2 metres with moderate flooding later this morning.

“Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall,” the bureau said.

At Maclean, the river could reach moderate flood levels of 2.2 metres overnight tonight.

Moderate to major flooding is also forecast for the Tweed River at Murwillumbah, Tumbulgum and Chinderah, with possible major flooding forecast for Tumbulgum later today.

It comes after major flooding was forecast for the Wilsons River at Lismore, where the river could reach the major flooding level of 9.7 metres today.
