Sarah never expected that a routine dermatology visit at 49 would change her entire approach to aging. After walking into a local practice for a mole check, she found herself not only with a trusted doctor, San Diego dermatologist Tess Mauricio, MD, but with a game plan for anti-aging treatments that would evolve over the next two decades.
“I was a cancer survivor, newly divorced and living on my own for the first time. I saw a new dermatologist had opened a practice nearby, and after finding a mole, I thought, ‘I need to get this checked out,’” Sarah recalls. “I was one of Dr. Tess Mauricio’s first patients. I walked in after finding a mole, and from there, it turned into a long-term relationship.”

The Turning Point
As she approached 50, Sarah noticed subtle but significant changes in her skin. “I had always felt fresh and youthful, but as I approached my 50s, I started noticing some sagging in my cheeks and lines around my lips,” she says. “People always complimented my eyes, and I didn’t want to lose that spark.”
After consulting with her doctor, they took a gradual approach. “Dr. Tess and I decided to start with the Time Machine Procedure, and I always say it’s the gift that keeps on giving—my skin just kept improving over time,” Sarah shares.
The Time Machine Procedure is Dr. Tess’s combination of lasers, radio-frequency microneedling and regenerative treatments like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and exosomes. “My skin developed this incredible glow, and I felt like I was aging on my own terms,” Sarah says.
A Subtle Approach
Over the years, Sarah has maintained her youthful look with a combination of anti-aging treatments. “I love Jeuveau for a little lift, and I’ve had fillers placed subtly in my lips, cheeks and jawline to restore volume,” she explains. “Everything is natural—people don’t think I’ve had work done.”
One of the most surprising treatments she underwent was for feminine wellness. “A few years ago, after a bad cold, I coughed and noticed slight leakage. That’s when Dr. Tess introduced me to the V Confidence treatment—it was life-changing,” Sarah shares. “I don’t understand why more women aren’t talking about it.”
Beauty Beyond Vanity
Now, at almost 70, Sarah says she feels better than ever. “My husband is 73, and when we go out, people tell him he ‘robbed the cradle.’ It’s not about vanity—it’s about feeling vibrant and confident.”
A jewelry designer and now an author, Sarah credits aesthetic treatments for her physical transformation and overall confidence. “Dr. Tess listens, understands and never lets me go too far. I feel like the best version of myself, not someone unrecognizable.”
Long-Term Results
Looking back on 20 years of treatments, Sarah emphasizes the importance of balance. “Some people think once you start, you’re stuck forever or that you’ll look overdone. That’s never been my experience,” she says. “I don’t feel like I’m on a strict schedule or locked into treatments. I go when I feel like I want a little boost.”
Her advice to those considering aesthetic treatments? “Start with what bothers you most. If it’s your lips, try a little filler. If it’s wrinkles, go for Jeuveau. And if it’s incontinence—don’t wait, just do it,” she urges. “These treatments aren’t about vanity, they’re about confidence and feeling like your best self.”
With a thoughtful approach to aging, Sarah plans to keep glowing well into her 90s. “Taking care of yourself isn’t about looking younger—it’s about feeling good in your own skin.”
