SHISEIDO recently hosted an illuminating summit titled “Potential Has No Age Limit,” featuring iconic women like Linda Evangelista and Jenna Lyons. The summit was anchored in the brand’s Vital Perfection franchise and “the belief that women can become the best version of themselves and reach their full potential at any age or stage of life.” The celeb pair had a thought-provoking conversation about aging, beauty and power. One of the most surprising moments of the discussion was when the 59-year-old supermodel referred to her melasma, which is one of the top skin concerns amongst women, as “a gift.”
At the opening of the discussion, Evangelista shared that she has very complex emotions and thoughts around aging, which gets complicated by all the feedback one receives in the modern age, which is different than when she began her career pre-social media.
When asked about a gift that aging has given her, Evangelista named melasma. “At the age of 33, suddenly I developed melasma, and that kept me out of the sun. My face has not seen the sun since I was 33,” she says. She explains that it was a good gift because it got her to take sun care seriously and stop taking part in unsafe tanning practices. “I didn’t know the damage I was doing, so the melasma was a gift because since I was 33 I started practicing sun safety.”
Sun care is not the only element of skin care Evangelista is obsessed with—it’s just the most important. “It makes me feel good to indulge in beauty routines, and I believe in research and development and clinicals behind great skin care,” says Evangelista. “I believe in my doctors and dermatologists as long as I know what I’m getting into and it’s safe. I believe in some light lasers and some help from the dermatologists.”
While Evangelista says, “aging is the most natural part of the cycle of life,” she also believes in the power of good skin care and expert dermatologists. “Why use a cream without benefits when you can use a cream with benefits?” she asks. “I believe in being transparent. Like I said, I want to age, but I want to look good along the way, and I’m going to tell the truth.”
