The full impact of the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires is still unfolding. With thousands evacuated and millions of dollars in property damage, experts are still struggling to gain control over all active blazes in the area. At the same time, the fallout from weeks of L.A. wildfires is beginning to come into focus. That includes the impact wildfire pollution has on the skin.

In 2021, a first-of-its-kind study on wildfire smoke concluded that the pollutants released led to an increase in atopic dermatitis and itch. That result isn’t surprising to dermatologists.
“Wildfire smoke can have significant effects on the skin,” explains national telehealth dermatologist Anna Chacon, MD. “That’s particularly true for those with pre-existing skin conditions or sensitive skin. The pollutants in smoke, including particulate matter and toxins, can irritate the skin. That leads to dryness, inflammation and even can exacerbate conditions like eczema and rosacea. It’s crucial for individuals to take preventive measures. This includes moisturizing regularly, avoiding outdoor exposure when possible and cleansing the skin gently to remove pollutants. If anyone experiences persistent irritation, they should seek advice from a dermatologist.”
Montclair, New Jersey dermatologist Jeanine Downie, MD adds that what’s burned in a wildfire impacts our bodies.
“Wildfire smoke contains many things that should never be burned with unwanted particles in the air,” Dr. Downie notes. “Burned rubber, chemicals, household products and metal from cars make up particulate matter that is in the air. This polluted air then can be almost toxic to the skin. It causes collagen breakdown and hyperpigmentation of the skin. Additionally, if one is exposed to this pollution all the time it may lead to a more rapid aging of the skin.”
