Spider-Man Reunites Marvel’s Most Twisted Couple

The following contains major spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #47, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

One of Marvel’s most dangerous couples has finally been reunited. Even worse, the one who brought them back together has her sights set on restarting an old war against Spider-Man.

Amazing Spider-Man #47 opens with what seems like a brutal sequence featuring a masked killer and a hapless victim tied to a chair. Before the enraged assailant can deliver the final blow, they are stopped by the surprisingly gentle hand of none other than Ben Reilly, aka Chasm, who unmasks the would-be killer as Hallow’s Eve herself – Janine Godbe. With that, the two are reunited after months separated by Hell itself, and while their wait started long ago, their business with the Queen Goblin is only just beginning.

Originally introduced as an unnamed Spider-Clone in the pages of 1975’s Amazing Spider-Man #149 by writer Gerry Conway and artist Ross Andru, Ben Reilly was one of several clones of Peter Parker created by Miles Warren, better known as the Jackal. Though Ben seemingly perished all those years ago, he would come back nearly two decades later, eventually stepping into the role of the Scarlet Spider after coming to terms with his place in the Marvel Universe.

Over the years, Ben met and fell in love with Janine Godbe, formerly Elizabeth Tyne, who was on the run for the murder of her abusive father. After years of hiding and even faking her own death, Janine turned herself in to the police to face incarceration for her father’s death. Eventually, she was released at the behest of the Beyond Corporation, who were looking for any means they could find to secure Ben’s place as their own corporate-owned Spider-Man.

Janine went so far as to accept a bag of magical masks from Limbo’s ruler, Madelyne Pryor. With the power to transform herself into any monster or being whose visage she pulls from her seemingly endless bag of masks, Janine Godbe became Hallow’s Eve, a role she has taken to more quickly and with greater consideration than anyone was expecting.

Spider-Man wears his classic red and blue and black symbiote suits in Marvel Comics

Spider-Man

Since his first appearance in 1962, Spider-Man has almost always been Marvel Comics’ most popular character. Known for his sense of humor and bad luck as well as his selflessness and super-strength, Spider-Man has helmed countless titles over the years, Spider-Man’s most prominent comics include The Amazing Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Peter Parker was the original Spider-Man but the Spider-Verse has become an important part of the character’s lore in recent years. Multiversal and future Spider-Men include Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Miguel O’Hara and Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham. This provided the premise for the popular Spider-Verse film trilogy, which makes Miles its primary hero.

Spider-Man is also the basis of several live-action film franchises and numerous animated television series. He is one of the most recognizable characters in the world. While he’s changed a lot over the decades, Steve Ditko and Stan Lee gave the world an unforgettable hero when they created Spider-Man.
