Wolverine’s Sabretooth War Hits Its Penultimate Chapter

The following contains spoilers for Wolverine #49 on sale next week

The Sabretooth War is almost finished, and a number of major Marvel characters have already been causalities along the way (including Wolverine’s son, Daken), and the penultimate issue of the epic storyline will see whether Sabretooth can really be taken down by the mysterious Killing Seed in this CBR exclusive preview of next week’s Wolverine #49.

Wolverine #49 is from writers Victor LaValle and Benjamin Percy, artist Geoff Shaw, colorist Alex Sinclair, and letterer Cory Petit (with a cover by Leinil Francis Yu and Romulo Fajardo Jr. featuring Wolverine in his new Adamantium Armor), and it continues the dramatic turn of events from Wolverine #47, where Sabretooth succeeded in having Wolverine’s powers neutralized, but before the sadistic villain could kill Wolverine, he was attacked by his former ally, Nekra, who hit him with the Killing Seed, which sprouted out like Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors, and swallowed Sabreooth whole. Next week, we get to see what the Killing Seed actually does to Sabretooth, and whether that will turn the tide in the Sabretooth War (as whether the main Sabretooth is dealt with or not, there are still a pile of alternate reality Sabreteeth on the loose, including the particularly dangerous variant known as the Bad Seed).

Sabretooth’s storyline in this crossover has been building for years, and LaValle has been the writer in charge of it all up until this point. Sabretooth was exiled to Krakoa’s Pit, and he was soon joined by other mutants, including Nekra and Oya (a former student of Wolverine’s). Eventually, Sabretooth escaped, and Doug Ramsey, of the Krakoan Quiet Council, freed the other exiled mutants in exchange for them agreeing to hunt Sabretooth down. Doug gave Nekra the mysterious “Killing Seed,” which he told her she could use on Sabretooth whenever she needed to.

In Wolverine #47, years after it was introduced, Nekra finally used the Killing Seed on Sabretooth. Meanwhile, Wolverine (now without his mutant powers) has donned an Adamantium suit of armor he had made for him for emergencies, just like this.

10 Important Questions Fall of X Still Hasn’t Answered

Fans never learned about Moira’s Sixth Life or saw Apocalypse spend time with his family, all loose ends that Fall of X could have cleared up.

The preview pages open with a recap of Sabretooth’s predicament (that he was about to win his war, by manipulating Kid Omega into using the power neutralizer gun on Wolverine, but then Quire turned on Sabretooth, just in time for Nekra to arrive and use the Seed).

We then see what, exactly, the Killing Seed, does. Ramsey had previously told Nekra that it was a fate that might be worse than death, and in these preview pages, it seems as though it is a sort of holographic lecture that a hologram version of Doug will give a captive Sabretooth. Is it possible that what Doug believes is worse than death for someone like Sabretooth is a forced lecture about ethics and/or morality? We shall find out for sure next week (and also see Wolverine rocking his Adamantium Armor).
