Owners Get New Kitten for Their Cat—Their Relationship Goes Viral

When a cat owner got a new kitten for her fur-baby, it didn’t look like they were going to like each other. But then something switched between the two, and now their sweet relationship has captured hearts on social media.

In a post shared on TikTok in October under the username @benniandvinnie, the poster’s cat, Benni, can be seen initially rejecting his little brother, Vinnie, trying to hit him with his paws and bite him at every possible chance.

“We got our cat a kitten… This is how it went…” the caption says. “[I]t started bad, benny was not impressed and constantly was trying to hit/bite him. It was stressful.”

The poster, 24-year-old Shannon from the U.K., told Newsweek that they got the new kitten because they felt bad for Benni being on his own, but it didn’t immediately go as expected.

Then something suddenly changed between the two cats. Vinnie had slowly managed to win his big brother’s heart over. By the end of the clip, the two felines were grooming each other, making biscuits together like real besties.

“He literally followed him everywhere. [Benni] started to get curious and give him a clean. [They] started to do things together (without Benni wanting to attack him). Now they are besties.”

While some cats are totally fine on their own and may even dislike having other felines around to steal the attention from them, others do need a lookalike companion to make their life more fun. But how do you know when it’s time to get your cat a friend?

An article by pet health and wellness website Catster medically reviewed by Dr. Paola Cuevas, says that when your cat needs a companion of their own, they will show signs that are easy to look out for once you know about them.

One such sign is a change in their sleeping patterns. If your cat sleeps more than usual or loses interest in you, they may be trying to tell you that they need a new sibling, although you should get this behavior assessed by their veterinarian.

Their energy levels may also drop because they’re bored, and they may start eating more or less than usual. Some cats also over-groom, because their loneliness has turned into stress.

Other signs include litter-box problems, shadowing you and showing amore destructive behavior than usual.

However, even if your cat is asking for a new furry friend, their introduction should be carried out gradually, giving them time to get to know each other well before being allowed to hang out on their own.

The best thing to do is to arrange a private area for each feline that their sibling doesn’t have access to, so they can feel safe at all times. Veterinarians suggest practicing scent swapping before introducing them face-to-face.

Their interactions should be fully supervised until you are sure they won’t harm each other.
