My mom lost her arm back in 1980 to cancer when she was just 14. Her dad had given her a prosthetic. However, due to the technology of the time and what they could afford, my mother had to control the prosthetic with her breath and she had told me how it had a string and a little claw at the end. She absolutely hated that thing and she’d get made fun of for knocking her prosthetic into walls and struggling to control it. Shortly after living with her prosthetic, she never used it again. She’s 57 now and to this day she functions with one arm and has never switched to a prosthetic.
Ever since I was young I have been very interested in technology including prosthetics. As soon as I found out that we now have the knowledge to make prosthetics that not only can be controlled easier but also helps with natural everyday functioning and is cheaper, I had to tell my mom. She has told me that she would never switch back to a prosthetic. However she has also told me that besides her personal preference of not having a prosthetic, she still appreciates the fact that more amputees and recent amputees today, now have more of an option to choose whether or not they should have a prosthetic. My mom didn’t have that option back then, and even though it was hard functioning with one arm, it was harder for her to function with the technology available at the time that was designed to make her life easier. I’m so happy that we’ve advanced so much in engineering that amputees have more of an option when it comes to daily functioning.
