Positive forecast
Buenos Aires is one of South America’s leading tourist destinations. In the first nine months of 2023, the country welcomed more than five million travelers, and in the first half of January of this year, nearly half a million had already visited. Though Aerolineas Argentinas, a state-owned airline, is cutting flights to the United States, United Airlines is not. According to Cirium data, United is increasing its flights to Buenos Aires this summer (winter in the Northern Hemisphere).
Data shows that as of last week, United was planning ten weekly flights (one daily on four days and two on three days of the week) in November, December, and January 2025. The schedule has been updated to reflect two daily flights from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport to Ministro Pistarini International Airport (commonly known as Ezeiza). Both flights will be operated by United’s Boeing 777-200 aircraft with 276 seats, allowing the airline to carry nearly 8,000 passengers weekly.

The second daily flight will launch on December 2, with one flight departing Houston in the early evening and the other in the late evening. On the return leg, both flights have a late-night departure and early arrivals into Houston. (In November, United will operate two flights on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays).

In February, United will reduce its flights to EZE, with only three days every week having two flights. According to data, the last day with two flights will be March 6. With the capacity increases in December and January, United will be able to transport more than 24,000 passengers each month, an increase of nearly 10,000 seats compared to the same period during the previous year.
Simple Flying asked United for a statement regarding the increased operations to Buenos Aires but did not receive a response at the time of publication.
Other changes to Buenos Aires
Yesterday, Simple Flying reported that Aerolineas Argentinas was cutting its New York operations in August. According to a local Argentinian publication, the route to John F. Kennedy International Airport was a loss-making route for the airline, which chose to focus on other destinations instead. In August, flights to Miami International Airport and Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport will increase.

Aerolineas only operates three weekly flights between the two cities, while two American airlines, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, have daily services. By the end of 2024, Aerolineas forecasts a $1 million loss.
“The decision reflects the consolidation of a permanent evaluation policy on the profitability of routes faced with an extremely volatile aviation market.”
The Argentinian state carrier has long been financially troubled, but in 2023, it turned a profit for the first time, only to have its president leave.
