Rebuilding trust after addiction is like trying to mend a delicate vase that’s been shattered. You can glue it back together, but the cracks will always show. It’s a difficult process, not just with others, but with yourself too.

Trust doesn’t come back overnight. It’s made up of small, consistent actions that, over time, start to fill in the gaps where doubt used to live. Here’s what I’ve learned about rebuilding trust.

Start by being honest with yourself. It’s about acknowledging your past actions and their effects. From there, make a commitment to change.

Apologizing to those you’ve hurt is another step, but the real work is in showing them through your actions that you’re on a different path. It’s about showing up, day in and day out, being reliable and making choices that reinforce your commitment to recovery.

Rebuilding trust with yourself might be the hardest part. It means forgiving yourself for past mistakes, recognizing your worth, and understanding that recovery is a series of steps forward, sometimes with a few steps back. It’s a process of relearning to trust your own decisions and instincts.

Patience is key. Trust is built slowly, and there will be setbacks. But with each small victory, trust grows stronger, both within yourself and with the people around you.

Part of recovery is learning to trust again. It’s not easy, and it doesn’t happen quickly, but it’s possible.
