This was a murder mystery told in dual timelines. I love dual timelines and discovering things while the current story is taking place. I think this is for fans of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None & Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club.

Frances Adams spends her life trying to prevent/solve her own murder. In 1965 Frances goes to a fair with her 2 best friends and is told a fortune:

“Your future contains dry bones. Your slow demise begins right when you hold the Queen in the palm of your hand. Beware the bird, for it will betray you. And, from that, there is no coming back. But daughters are the key to justice, find the right one and keep her close. All signs point toward your murder.”

In the present day, her great-niece, Annie Adams, is summoned to her estate by her lawyer to find out some information about the house they live in. When they meet at her house in the village of Castle Knoll, her aunt is found dead. Her lawyer, who we find out was also part of her friend group when she was younger, reads the will and her stipulations to the will. Annie is determined to find out who the killer is. Her aunt has multiple filing cabinets FILLED with secrets on everyone in town so the motive and killer isn’t going to be easy.

I just LOVED this one. The flashes to the past happened at just the right time to reveal important information. The characters were all sketchy and had secrets so I suspected everyone. I can honestly say, I didn’t guess this ending. I love books where you don’t know who to trust and what clues you should follow down the rabbit hole. I could see this making a great movie!

I’d like to thank Penguin Random House for sending me a copy of this in exchange for my honest opinions. This one released on my birthday so this was a nice bday gift from the publisher!
