Kamen Rider Black returns in 2022 – CoolJapan Otaku

Kamen Rider Black, one of the most popular series of the tokusatsu superhero franchise since its TV debut in 1987, is getting a reboot. Titled Kamen Rider Black Sun, it is set to start in Spring 2022.

Kazuya Shiraishi, better known for his crime movies The Devil’s Path and The Blood of Wolves, has been tasked to direct the production. The logo, created by calligrapher Soun Takeda, was revealed at the announcement on 3 April.

“I am trembling at this unbelievable project of rebooting Kamen Rider Black,” Shiraishi said. “I will put all my talent into this so as not to be overwhelmed by the weight of 50 years of Kamen Rider history. I will do my best to make sure the tragic story of Kotaro Minami and Nobuhiko Akizuki leaves a new mark on the history of Japanese heroes. Please look forward to it!”

Kamen Rider Black was born from the concept by original creator Shotaro Ishinomori. It tells the story of Kotaro Minami, who after having his body physically altered by Golgom, chooses to take down the evil cult as Black. His fight to the death with Shadow Moon, the corrupt form of his best friend Nobuhiko Akizuki, is one of the biggest reasons why the work remains critically acclaimed to this day.

Also revealed earlier in the day is the anime adaptation of Kamen Rider W’s sequel, Futo Detectives.
