Unspoken Realities of Addiction

realities of addiction

Recovery is a word we throw around a lot, but there’s so much going on behind it that an ordinary person doesn’t know. Chatting with a friend who’s been through the thick of it, I realized we don’t talk enough about the challenges and the little victories that come with recovery.

Here are some truths about recovery that don’t get enough airtime:

It’s More Than Just Quitting: Recovery messes with your head and heart. It’s tangled up with mental health in ways we often ignore.

Relationships Get Rocky: Fixing the damage done to relationships is tough. It’s about learning to say sorry and really mean it, and sometimes, it’s about forgiving yourself too.

Every Day Counts: Staying sober? It’s a bunch of daily decisions, not just one big one. And man, some days are way harder than others.

Be Kind to Yourself: I learned from my buddy that beating yourself up gets you nowhere. Self-compassion is key. It’s not about being easy on yourself; it’s about giving yourself the same break you’d give a friend.

Sharing Helps: Talking about our struggles and victories can lift us up. It shows us we’re not alone in this.

Recovery’s tough, no sugarcoating it. But diving into these truths can help us understand it better and feel a little less alone. Let’s keep the conversation going and support each other every step of the way.

Best,

Ben Randolph
