Trump laments ‘short period of time’ to prep for hush money trial

Former President Donald Trump took to Truth Social Sunday to bemoan the timing of his New York criminal trial.

Trump’s New York trial was initially slated to begin jury selection on March 25, but it was delayed to Monday due to the motions filed by Trump’s lawyers. They initially asked for a 90-day delay to review the documents handed down by federal prosecutors, but they settled with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for a 30-day delay.

“Judge Juan Merchan, perhaps the most highly conflicted Judge in New York State history, only gave us a short period of time to read and study hundreds of thousands of pages of documents that D.A. Alvin Bragg illegally hid, disguised, and held back from us,” Trump wrote. “Of course, and as the Judge knows, we need far more time than that. They could have started this Fake Biden Trial many years ago, not right in the middle of my campaign for President, and time would not be a problem.”

Trump is facing 34 felony counts over allegations of paying hush money to multiple women in 2018 who claim they had an affair with him. Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen and porn star Stormy Daniels are expected to testify. According to Daniels, she is among the women who received hush money payments from Trump.

While Trump has 88 felony charges against him filed by prosecutors across the nation, this is the only criminal trial that has the potential to issue a verdict before the 2024 elections. He is the presumptive Republican nominee for president and is expected to face President Joe Biden.

The judge in the New York case, Juan Merchan, issued a gag order against Trump to keep him from talking about court staff, their family members, or Merchan’s own daughter Loren Merchan, who has worked with Democrats as a political consultant.
