Russell Brand criticized for showing tarot cards in video posted day after baptism
Celebrity podcast host Russell Brand posted a video on Monday on his social media accounts showing him flipping through tarot cards one day after his Christian baptism.
“Oh, it’s the old kidnapped-and-held-hostage-by-some-railings card,” Brand said as he held up a tarot card of a man blindfolded and tied to a fence. “That can’t be good news, can it?”
“If you’ve looked into it, this card is called the ‘Eight of Swords,’ and it symbolizes feeling trapped and restricted perhaps by your own convictions,” Brand explained.
He put the card down and asked his fans about their views of tarot cards as he described himself as someone who is moving into a more “clearly delineated spiritual space with a clearly more ordained path.”
“A lot of Christians would say tarot and even Yoga is a kind of heresy. What is your personal view on that?” Brand asked his fans.
Brand inquired if his audience still believed in symbols and signs.
The actor held up the tarot card and noted that the cards could serve as a “tool for reflection and personal analysis.”
He went on to talk about how he was listening to Hallow, a Catholic meditation and prayer app, to reflect on his Christian faith and then incorporated how the tarot card reminded him that he had “removed the blindfold” to find the pathway of God as “the only pathway for me.”
He added as he held the tarot card, asking whether his Christian fans still “meddle in the cultist arts.”
Social media weighed in on Brand’s video post.
“You do realize that baptized Christians don’t play with tarot cards? God is the only force you need,” one social media user said.
Another person chimed in, “Do not mess with tarot cards. They’re demonic.”
“No Tarot. Not if you’re truly walking with Jesus. C’mon now,” one woman scoffed.
Another user said, “You are playing with demons and endangering your soul. Burn that and pray the rosary.”
“I highly recommend avoiding Tarot cards, astrology, etc. It’s important not to ‘mix’” in spiritual elements that aren’t of God. All you need is Jesus—He is the source of all Truth and wisdom,” another woman said.
Brand shared his ‘incredible’ experience of getting baptized on Sunday in a social media post that followed his tarot card post a few hours later.
In recent weeks, Brand has been making videos about his faith and showing himself praying the rosary aloud by memory.
Social media users slammed the timing of his baptism and the video delving into common Christian beliefs that tarot cards go against biblical teachings on divination.
“Yikes, man. I thought you were just baptized. What church they do this at?” a man wrote in response to Brand’s post.

Another person harshly weighed in, “Already revealing that you’re a fraud.”
“If you’re going to become an adult in Christ, then it’s time to put childish (and demonic) things away,” a social media user said.
