Harkaway: Horse lover’s dream home in Melbourne’s southeast could break suburb’s residential record

3 Hilden Drive, Harkaway is on the market for $18m-$19.8m.

An award-winning modern mansion in leafy Harkaway is set to break the suburb’s residential price record.

The six-bedroom house at 3 Hilden Drive is listed with an $18m-$19.8m price tag, and if it sells within this range, will surpass the area’s benchmark by at least $3.7m.

The current record is held by currently held by 194-204 King Rd, which sold for $14.3m in 2022.

Vendor Jane Crantock purchased the property in 1997 and later collaborated with CATT Architects and Visioneer builders to design a residence that would suit her family.

Brighton home has its own poolside movie screen

Its unique construction was recognised in the 2017 HIA CSR Victorian Housing Awards and the 2017 Master Builders Excellence in Housing Awards.

“I wanted something that was fairly bold and modern but fairly low maintenance; it had to sit well with the environment and the local topography,” Ms Crantock said.

“It’s been lovely to live in. It’s very, very private and yet we’re so close to the city; you sort of feel like you’re in your own little world,” she said.

The home was built using rammed earth.

And as an avid horse rider, the grounds offer state-of-the-art equestrian facilities like indoor and outdoor arenas, stabling for four horses, an ancillary feed and wash up area, a machinery shed and a float shed.

Rammed earth, timber cladding, glazed cabinetry panels and stone tiled floors were used in the construction of its expansive floorplan; including a gallery, mud room, study and multiple living and entertaining spaces.

Among its outdoor equestrian facilities are a 15m swimming pool and spa adjoined by a pavilion with a bathroom, gymnasium and recreation room.

There are plenty of fenced areas to keep horses.

Ms Crantock said the best part of living in the custom abode was waking up in the main bedroom because of its sweeping views of the gardens and wildlife.

“The next favourite place is the terrace where we’ve had many, many wonderful meals when the weather’s fine; we just sit there and watch the world go by,” she said.

“I love the fact that there’s still quite a lot of native bushland around us and there are lots of fabulous walking tracks.”

First National Real Estate Neilson Partners Berwick director Peter Watson said the breathtaking house was a private enclave sitting on nearly 12ha.

“The way the home just sits on the land, your immediate gardens give way to treetops and extended views,” he said.

“You just don’t have the sense of having neighbours at all.”

He added that he had seen some beautiful properties in his more than 30 years of real estate, but it wasn’t until he drove up the driveway that he could fully appreciate what this residence offered.
