Dubai airport is underwater: flights cancelled and diverted

Dubai experienced an extraordinary deluge, receiving an entire year and a half’s worth of rain within a single day. Unfortunately, one person lost their life, and travel operations at the world’s busiest airport were significantly disrupted.

Due to extensive flooding caused by heavy rainfall, flights bound for Dubai International Airport, renowned as the world’s busiest for international travel, faced temporary diversions to alternate destinations on Tuesday evening.

Travellers encountered prolonged delays, with some waiting for hours for their flights amidst the chaos. Navigating through the inundated surrounding roads, passengers encountered challenges reaching terminals amid knee-deep floodwaters.

“Due to the unprecedented weather conditions in the UAE, Dubai International (DXB) is advising passengers not to come to the airport unless absolutely necessary. Flights continue to be delayed and diverted. Please contact your airline for the latest information on your flight status. We are working hard to recover operations as quickly as possible in very challenging conditions,” said a Dubai Airport spokesperson at 8:57 AM on Tuesday.

Dramatic images and footage circulated, revealing major highways submerged underwater, vehicles stranded, and substantial damage inflicted upon residences and businesses.

The storms swamped roadways and created dangerous conditions across the region, a normally arid part of the world that is unaccustomed to intense rain and flash flooding.

Authorities and communities across the United Arab Emirates were clearing debris on Wednesday after the torrential downpour killed at least one person.
