Katie Crutchfield, the creative force behind Waxahatchee, chats with Kyle Meredith about Tigers Blood, her immaculate new record. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.

The singer-songwriter explains how much of the album was written while on the road touring, as well as how such her environment seeped its way into the music. Writing this way was a new experience for Crutchfield, though through it, she was able to fully dissect the intersection of her artistic and personal lives.

Crutchfield also dives into other outside influences that made their way into the new batch of songs, from life’s contradictions to Wynona Judd. Of these inspirations is R.E.M. vocalist Michael Stipe, who the artist cites as a massive influence on her own approach to singing.

“I don’t have a traditionally amazing voice, but my voice has its own personality, which is kind of all I’ve ever wanted,” she explains. “My favorite singer on earth is Michael Stipe. He’s such a template for what I want to do. There’s moments where it’s really strong and it’s loud and it’s big and it’s very emotive, but it’s kind of its own thing, which is kind of what I strive for.”
