Medicinal Media brings in Jada Pinkett-Smith and Adriene Mishler to board

Jada Pinkett-Smith and Adriene Mishler have joined Medicinal Media as board members to elevate mental health awareness month.

Medicinal Media is a nonprofit media-for-mental-health organization, that was founded a year ago. The company’s online tool and resource center for mental health is a “tonic for the doom-scrolled soul” in a time when isolation, anxiety, and mental health issues are at an all-time high.

“I love Medicinal Media because it utilizes joyous art to engage people from all backgrounds in a positive and hopeful exploration of the various new tools that can help fill in the gaps of traditional mental healthcare, especially for those with limited or no access,” said Pinkett-Smith, in a statement. “We are meeting people where they are, which I believe is key to success in both individual and collective healing.”

Actress Jada Pinkett-Smith, most recently known for authoring her NYT bestselling book, Worthy, has joined the organization as a board member and strategic advisor.

“Medicinal Media is a wonderful name for the work I’ve found myself doing for most of my career now, and I’m a huge believer in the strategy of bringing joy and agency into the conversations around mental health maintenance and self-care,” said Mishler, in a statement. “I’ve personally learned so much about the great science-backed work going on from following Medicinal Media this past year, and I’m thrilled to be able to do my part to amplify this movement.”

Mishler, the actor and wellness entrepreneur internationally famous for Yoga With Adriene, the 12+-year-old YouTube channel that leads all online yoga channels with more than 12 million active subscribers, will kick off her new role at Medicinal Media with a virtual yoga gathering fundraiser, Move For Mental Health, on May 25.

Pinkett-Smith and Mishler join Tripp VR CEO, Nanea Reeves, and prominent civil rights attorney, Terry Gross, and social worker and board president Melissa Wilson, who have served on the board since its inception a year ago.

“We are thrilled Jada and Adriene — two incredible powerhouses — have joined our board,” said Melissa Wilson, cofounder and board president for Medicinal Media, in a statement. “Medicinal Media exists to shine a light on wonderful content from around the globe, and having these two inspiring women as part of our mission is a testament to the work of our dedicated team.

Just over a year since its website and social channels went live, Medicinal Media has already reached more than 45 million people worldwide with its original stories, short documentaries, and wildly popular child-led somatic short films. The organization is growing its productions in ways that will continue to maximize reach, including more longer-form content. Devolver cofounder Mike Wilson helped start the nonprofit a year ago along with Melissa Wilson.
