Gleipnir (Volume 2) – This Could Be Our Last Day Alive!

What happened?

They killed someone, and yet, Clair seems to be acting like normal. Shuichi is struggling to get over it, and Clair’s reaction. However, she’s keen to get back inside of him. She wants to find her sister, Elana who Clair believes killed their parents. After a bit of practice, they discover that both Clair and Shuichi can control his movements, however, Clair has the deciding vote. However, they are like one in almost every other aspect. She can feel his emotions and is aware of his incredible senses. That will come in perfect for finding Elena. Clair gives Shuichi Elena’s uniform in the hopes he can track her down. The smell is startling. Shuichi suddenly has no doubt that Elena did kill their parents and probably many, many more people.

They decide to camp out at a train station. If Elena is still in town, and Clair believes she is, there will be a trail. Someone must be helping her. Then, after three days, they finally get a lead. However, it’s not someone helping Elena, it’s actually her. Clair plans on ambushing her, but Shuichi stops her from shooting Elena in the head at the last second. That gave Elena the chance to move behind them and ask if they could go somewhere quieter. Shuichi and Clair followed and listened as Elena talked about how she had been waiting for him to come and kill her. It was her that gave him that body after all. Then, she heard Clair’s voice from within Shuichi and lost it, ripping his head off to see who it was. She was surprised to find Clair. She admitted to killing their parents and then gave her a coin and told her about an alien who lived at an abandoned love hotel who could help them. Then, she left…

What did you think?

Just writing the description of what happened made me realise just how completely insane this series is, and yet, it works. There are so many crazy concepts that it should fall flat on its face and squirm around in the dirt, but it does anything but that. It’s absolutely captivating. I can’t get enough of it, and that might be because of how many risks it takes. This series is not afraid to go all out. I guess the idea of Clair going inside Shuichi opens up the possibilities for all sorts of shenanigans.

One thing, I really liked about this volume was how it showed us that Elena knew Shuichi. At first, we would assume that she was talking to Clair since we knew that Clair wanted to kill her, but she didn’t even know she was inside Shuichi. So, on second glance everything she said was meant for Shuichi. That was quite clever and to reveal that by making Elena go wild with jealousy because someone other than her was inside Shuichi was to be expected given how wild this series is.

After that, we got a lot of exposition from the alien who transformed into Clair to show off his abilities. It also set the stage for Shuichi to realise just what is at stake here. The alien claims that he could give someone the power to destroy a planet like a manga character. Of course, Shuichi believes there’s more to this than we’ve been told, and it’s hard to argue with that. Anyhow, Clair and Shuichi are about to go searching for coins and things are going to escalate from there! It’s hard to imagine, but it will!
