Spring Thunderstorms Erupt Around California (4-16-2018) #111

Boom! Just caught a nice lightning strike! It’s towards the end of the video clip. An area of t-storms was drifting over the northern outskirts of Sacramento, CA at the time. Gotta love this weather! I was out chasing storms in the valley this day… This day’s chase in summary – After experiencing some thunder & lightning and even a brief quake in San Jose, I headed out to the valley during the late morning hours. Seeing nothing developing yet, I chilled in Lathrop for a bit then headed north to Galt, CA to grab a quick lunch. Things started to get interesting by the afternoon & upon reaching the Sacramento area, t-storms have developed. Thunder, lightning, hail & heavy rain were all observed throughout the afternoon. I then headed to Woodland, CA for a quick pit stop. I then resumed chasing as I slowly headed back south towards Galt from Sacramento after taking a detour (since the area around Downtown Sacramento was backed up likely due to all the hail that had fallen there). Some late-day stormy skies were seen around Galt & then I decided to call it a day & refueled at a nearby Valero. It was another ‘decent’ chase day today, though I liked the chase back in March a tad better… ‘Til next time, drive safe out there! (Storm chase taken place Monday, April 16, 2018)

*Weather forecast/update:
More unsettled weather was in store for California. Despite the pleasant weather this weekend, the next low pressure area & frontal system was slowly approaching this day. This system was to spread rain over the area late Sunday with scattered showers & t-storms by Monday, especially for the Central Valley areas. By Tuesday, the showers were to clear out. Then by Wednesday, another weaker low pressure area was to move thru NorCal with more rain. Looking ahead, it looks like the region was to finally start to have a more consistently dry pattern starting Thursday as a weak high pressure ridge arrives along the coast. This was to push the jet stream, or storm track, back up northward… Enjoy the rains while it lasts!
