Riverside is believed to be the first planned community in the United States. This Chicago suburb was designed in 1869 by celebrated landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and his partner, Calvert Vaux, who hoped to create a community with a pastoral feel in an urban setting. Instead of planning the community’s streets in a grid layout, they planned the streets to follow the area’s natural contours. Streets follow the Des Plaines River, and continue from there to wind all through the Village.
