New Orleans: Audubon Park: redbuds

Branches of a redbud tree (Cercis) in Audubon Park (New Orleans, in the Gulf Coast region of the southeastern United States), beginning to flower on a mostly clear morning in late February 2009 — in what in New Orleans would typically be early spring.

This species is perhaps the Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis). While its native habitat is actually further north than southeastern Louisiana, it can be found in parks and gardens here.

In the background, part of the tower of Holy Name of Jesus Church, which is on the campus of Loyola University New Orleans, just beyond the park along St. Charles Avenue. Toward the middle distance, the main park footpath-bicycle path can be seen (with a few walkers), and a bit of the park’s lagoon can be glimpsed towards the left.
