The many golden domes of St. Michael’s Monastery, in the Podil area of Kyiv (Kiev), Ukraine.

Originally built in the 11th century in dedication to St Demetrius of Thessaloniki, the monastery and cathedral were damaged during the Mongol invasion of 1240, and fell into disrepair. The monastery was reconsecrated in the 15th century with a rededicated to Archangel Michael, and was was enlarged and developed throughout the 16th century. However following joining the USSR, the entire complex was demolished in the 1930s (and replaced by tennis and volleyball courts). Following Ukrainian independence in the 1990s, the cathedral and monastery were rebuilt as part of the restoration of Ukrainian culture and heritage.

Taken with a Nikon D40 and a Nikkor AFS DX 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6G II lens, and processed in GIMP and Photoscape.
