Courage to Share – by Sheyvah Rex

I hurtled down the freeway, wondering what to say.

As a special education assistant, I was riding with my fourth-grade student who has autism and his mother on a field trip to a museum.

When I heard about the ride assignment, an idea popped into my mind. I should tell her about Jesus. I hadn’t had much time with his mom, but this seemed like a God opportunity.

Immediately, conflicting thoughts argued. She won’t want to hear about Jesus. She might get mad. What if she gets irritated enough to complain to the principal?

The Lord whispered, I want you to do this.

Before leaving, I asked my family and Bible study group to pray for me. On the ride there, we chatted about surface things. Our group traipsed down to the beach after touring the museum.

An awkward silence fell.

Talk to her, the Lord urged me.
But there are too many people around.

Finally, back into the SUV. The conversation was still strained as I tried to turn it around to a faith opening.

Joshua 1:9 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your
God will be with you wherever you go (NIV).

She mentioned being thankful for something. I plunged in.

This reminds me that I am thankful for God in my life. Do you have a faith?

I’m a Sikh,” she admitted. Punjab, a northern Indian state, is where the Sikh religion has its roots. Canada has the largest population of Sikhs outside India.

Do you go to the temple very often?” I asked.

Well, you know,” she hedged, “we go to say our prayers. It’s part of the culture.

I love and follow Jesus Christ,” I smiled. “Have you ever read the Bible?

No, but my husband went to Catholic school.”

Oh really? Do you mind if I tell you a bit about the Bible and Jesus?

No, go ahead.

I explained what the Lord means to me and how God forgives people.

She said, “That’s nice,” and changed the subject.

I knew Christ’s Holy Spirit had given me the courage to share. I prayed that the planted seeds of His word will bear fruit in her life.

I challenge you not to be afraid but to take the opportunities our Father provides to share His love
