Gail Simone appeared at an X-Men: From the Ashes panel at WonderCon this past weekend, and she revealed some new details about her upcoming run on Uncanny X-Men with artist David Marquez, including the fact that the series will include four brand-new mutants. These new mutants will join the previously announced cast of the series, which includes Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Jubilee, Gambi, and team leader, Rogue.
PopVerse’s Jules Chin Greene live-blogged the panel on Saturday, sharing Simone’s thoughts on the series, and its Louisiana setting, as well as her thoughts on the new cast members, and more importantly, what she is trying to achieve with the mutations of these new mutants.

OUTLAW HEROES ONCE AGAIN, THE X-MEN EMBARK ON A NEW MISSION!
Making themselves at home in the Big Easy, the X-Men protect a world that hates and fears them! Join ROGUE, GAMBIT, NIGHTCRAWLER, JUBILEE and WOLVERINE on explosive super hero adventures. Uncanny as ever, the X-Men are back to saving the day mutant-style!
When discussing the X-Men overall, Simone noted that the appeal of the X-Men is that there is something inside of them that makes them feel different, and in turn that difference alienates them from the rest of the world. Simone notes that that is obviously relatable to so many of us in the real world.
With that in mind, then, Simone points out that the four new mutants that will be introduced in this series all have powers that she was inspired to create based on the idea of “hidden disabilities” in the real world. So these mutants are contrasted against, say, Wolverine being able to pop out his claws.
The X-Men are Officially Working with Mutantkind’s Worst Enemies
Marvel’s Fall of the House of X just put mutantkind’s remaining heroes on the same side of the battlefield as their worst human enemies.
What is so special about the setting of Uncanny X-Men?
Simone points out that each of the three “core” X-Men titles will have a distinctive feel to them, and a lot of that will be based on the location of the comics. In her series, based in New Orleans, the series will have a “Southern Gothic” feel to it. She notes that Marquez has impressed her with his ability to not only do great action scenes, but also to handle small, emotional scenes well, as well.
Simone also added that, “Everyone is my favorite while I’m writing them, this is why it’s been so fun to write this.”
Uncanny X-Men #1 is scheduled to be released on August 7th.
