The Fantastic Four are Stepping into Marvel’s Next Noir Mystery

The following contains major spoilers for Fantastic Four #19, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The Fantastic Four’s next big adventure is a classic noir mystery. However, this time, Alicia Masters is the one in charge.

Fantastic Four #19 drops readers into a dimly lit, clearly noir-inspired version of the Marvel Universe. Against a nearly entirely black and white backdrop, one Miss Susie Storm enters the picture wearing an immediately eye-catching red ensemble as she walks into the office of none other than Alicia Masters, P.I.

First seen in the pages of 1962’s Fantastic Four #8 by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, Alicia Masters is the daughter of Jacob Reiss, the former partner in crime of Phillip Masters, better known as the Puppet Master. When Jacob turned on the Puppet Master, both his wife Marcia and Alicia were caught in the ensuing lab explosion which claimed his daughter’s sight, along with his own life. Not knowing that Phillip was responsible for Jacob’s death, Marcia later married the villain, who swore to protect and care for Alicia as if she were his own child.

In the years since her debut, Alicia has become a regular fixture in the lives of Marvel’s First Family. This is primarily due to Alicia’s romance with Ben Grimm, aka the Thing, who she finally married in the opening story from 2018’s Fantastic Four #5, “4-Minute Warning” by writer Dan Slott and artist Aaron Kuder. Only a few short years after they exchanged vows, Ben and Alicia became adoptive parents to Jo-Venn and N’Kalla, the young Kree and Skrull former child soldiers whom the Fantastic Four rescued from the interstellar villain known as the Profiteer.

Ms. Marvel is teaming up with one of the Marvel Universe’s biggest stars — and it is just the beginning of a new interstellar adventure.

Over the past year, the Fantastic Four have gone their separate ways and come back together as a family and team, all thanks to Reed Richards’ desperate attempt to avert total disaster. After the Baxter Building came under attack from a band of Negative Zone assailants, Reed sent the building one year into the future along with everyone inside it. Because this separated the adults on the team from their children, it also drove a massive wedge between those left behind. Thankfully, the core members of the Fantastic Four were able to come to terms with what had happened and reform prior to the return of their home and family.
