The Avengers Finally Go to War with the X-Men’s Worst Enemies

The following contains major spoilers for Avengers #12, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The Avengers are headed for the fight of their lives. It also just so happens to be the fight for the future of mutantkind.

After months of hanging back on the sidelines and dealing with an entirely different breed of cosmic threat, the titular heroes of Avengers #12 are finally ready to stand on the front lines of the war against Orchis. As the team begins their carefully calculated series of strikes on mutantkind’s oppressors, one of Orchis’ very own leaders, M.O.D.O.K., is being reminded just how much of a threat to their reign Earth’s Mightiest Heroes truly are, even if he isn’t particularly swayed by the 3-D Man’s words alone.

The anti-mutant organization known as Orchis has risen to untold heights of power since its attack on the most recent Hellfire Gala back in 2023. Although Orchis was purportedly fighting against mutantkind in the name of humanity, recent months have revealed their true intentions as a front for the rise of the near-omnipotent life forms known as Dominions. These efforts have been headed up by Orchis’ mechanized leaders, Nimrod and the Omega Sentinel.

Delroy Garrett Jr., better known as the 3-D Man, was imbued with a superhuman physique, healing factor, and his unique Tri-Force vision after being exposed to a fragment of ancient Triad energy similar to that which gave the original 3-D Man, Hal Chandler, his astonishing powers. Garrett originally took on the mantle of Triathlon before becoming the 3-D Man, a change that came after decades of serving alongside the Avengers. Garrett developed a deep disdain for the Avengers after being expelled from the Initiative program following the events of Secret Invasion, during which he executed an innocent Skrull.

Prior to joining in the fight against Orchis, the Avengers were embroiled in the battle against the members of the Ashen Combine. These interdimensional threats were only defeated after their own Impossible City, a massive, sentient superstructure, turned against them. Since then, the Impossible City has served as the new base of operations for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, as well as a member of the Avengers in its own right.
