Superman’s Newest Nightmare is the Most Brutal Form of His Worst Enemy

The following contains major spoilers for Superman #14, on sale now from DC Comics.

Superman is facing down several of his most dangerous enemies. Even worse, one of them has unleashed something stronger than any of them.

After facing off against Lobo, an entire army of Czarnians, and Brainiac’s mechanized minions, the titular hero of Superman #14 is subjected to a sight more grim than anything he could have possibly prepared for. As it turns out, Brainiac has spent the past few months creating a beast more dangerous than any of his superpowered captives. Worse still, he is more than happy to unleash his Queen upon the very same Czarnians he enlisted in capturing Superman, and it only takes her seconds to tear through each and every one of them in order to feed her insatiable hunger.

Superman #14 marks the fourth part of Joshua Williamson’s “House of Brainiac” story arc, which has seen the eponymous villain return to prominence. Much like many of Brainiac’s previous endeavors, the current story arc has seen the villain capture key figures in the DC Universe. Among Brainiac’s current captives are fellow Superman foes Parasite and Livewire, while the likes of Lex Luthor and Lobo have largely played the role of allies to the Man of Steel, albeit with some twists and turns along the way.

The Czarnian army known as the Bad Blood, led by the now deceased General Chacal, was introduced in the pages of Superman #7. As was revealed shortly after, this group of Czarnians had previously conquered an alien city and were in the midst of ransacking what was left of it when it was miniaturized and bottled by Brainiac. Thanks to this unique procedure and the Czarnians’ generally indestructible nature, they survived for decades, if not centuries, before being unleashed to carry out Brainiac’s plot.

The original, Pre-Crisis Brainiac, or Vril Dox, was introduced all the way back in 1958’s Action Comics #242 in Otto Binder and Al Plastino’s opening story, “The Super-Duel in Space.” Since then, Brainiac has undergone dozens of major overhauls, both in terms of appearance and motivation. Though primarily a villain, numerous versions of Brainiac have come into their own as heroes across different eras and iterations of the DC Universe. Among the most popular of these heroic Brainiacs is Querl Dox, or Brainiac 5, a recurring member of the DC Universe’s most prominent future super team, the Legion of Superheroes.
