Spider-Woman Brings Back a Classic Marvel Supervillain

The following contains spoilers for Spider-Woman #7, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Spider-Woman is still on the hunt for her Hydra-hailing son. Unfortunately, an even bigger Marvel supervillain is already standing in her way.

After making the trek all the way out to San Francisco in search of her son Gerry Drew and his Hydra overlords, the titular hero of Spider-Woman #7 finds herself investigating the goings-on of yet another ominous organization in the form of the Echidna corporation. While Spider-Woman was more than prepared to creep through Echidna’s stronghold, she wasn’t ready for a fight with Zzzax the Living Dynamo.

Zzzax debuted in 1973’s Incredible Hulk #166 by writer Steve Englehart and artist Harb Trimpe. Zzzax came into form following a near-disastrous incident at a nuclear power plant. After a group of terrorists stormed the plant, the ensuing battle led to an explosion that supercharged the reactor with a fast-growing electromagnetic field that somehow took a roughly humanoid form and developed a rudimentary consciousness. Naming itself Zzzax, this being went on to fight both the Hulk and Hawkeye, the latter of whom was able to shut the budding villain down with a single critical shot.

In the years since, Zzzax has gone up against heroes like Ms, Marvel, Luke Cage and Tony Stark, though it has rarely been able to hold its own against the likes of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. In one of the villain’s most crushing defeats, Iron Man was able to absorb Zzzax’s living energies into his armor, trapping the entity before dispersing its base components across the atmosphere in a move that seemingly eradicated it entirely.
