Rob Liefeld Returns to Deadpool for One Last Epic Team-Up Series

Over thirty years after creating Deadpool, Rob Liefeld is again returning to the character for an all-new epic team-up series that he is writing and drawing that Liefeld stated earlier this year will be his final Deadpool story. The series will feature the Merc with the Mouth teaming up with a mixture of famous and less famous Marvel heroes like the Hulk, Wolverine, Ghost-Spider, Crystar and Major X, all due to a “lost” Marvel character.

The series will be titled Deadpool Team-Up, and will run five issues, staring in August, with a main cover by Liefeld, as well as a special foil variant cover, as well (Liefeld recently did a special variant cover for Dynamite’s Thundercats #1 that helped that series sell some huge numbers).

Marvel MultiVerse Role-Playing Game’s first comic book adventure, the Deadpool Role-Plays the Marvel Universe one-shot, launches in July.

What does Rob Liefeld have to say about Deadpool Team-Up?

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Liefeld discussed his approach to this project, “Everyone has that one comic with that obscure character that they always wanted more of. l, myself, have several of these and I pulled them from relative obscurity from the deepest corners of the Marvel Universe and placed them next to Deadpool, right at the center of an all new, cataclysmic adventure!”

Deadpool previously had a Deadpool Team-Up series in 2009-2011 (that amusingly counted BACKwards, starting at #900), plus a special Deadpool Team-Up one-shot all the way back in 1998, but this is the first time that Liefeld has done a Deadpool Team-Up series. He continued to note about the upcoming series, that “[t]his is some wonderfully weird stuff and I’m so excited to share it with the world. I promise you some familiar Marvel faces and take them to brand new places. Deadpool Team-Up is the most fun I’ve had in years! I’d like to thank C.B. Cebulski and Mark Basso for making this a great experience!”

Wolverine and Deadpool are part-time allies, part-time enemies who share many powers, but which of these Weapon X mutants is actually the strongest?

What has Liefeld said about this being his final Deadpool story?

Earlier this year, Liefeld shocked the comic book world by announcing on his social media, “I am retiring from Deadpool. It’s official. Yup, after 33 years of not only introducing Deadpool but chronicling many of his most popular adventures, it’s time for the Deadpool Daddy to say farewell.”

He explained his decision for retiring from the character now, “In case you are wondering, why now? That’s easy, I’ll be 57 at the end of this and my eyes are still functioning, the work continues to be strong, I want to go out with the best effort I can muster. The hand-eye coordination won’t be there forever.”

Deadpool Team-Up #1 is set to be released on Aug. 28th.
