Charles Xavier’s fight for mutantkind sends him to war with one of his own. Unfortunately for him, she was made to be the most capable of them all.

Rise of the Powers of X #4 within the extradimensional space known as No-Place X, Charles Xavier stands over the dead Rachel Summers, whom he just shot in cold blood. Xavier isn’t alone, however, and the only thing holding back the mutant chimera Rasputin IV is a captive Mother Righteous.

No-Place X became one of the last refuges for mutantkind following the emergence of the Dominion known as Enigma. As a near-omnipotent being formed from the ascended consciousness of Nathaniel Essex, Enigma is capable of hunting his mutant enemies across space and time. Since Enigma’s appearance, No-Place X has served as one of the last spaces in which Charles Xavier is safe from Enigma’s gaze.

Introduced in 2022’s Legion of X #1 by writer Simon Spurrier and artist Jan Bazaldua, Mother Righteous is one of the four clones created by the original Nathaniel Essex. Whereas Mister Sinister, Doctor Stasis, and Orbis Stellaris are all clones of Essex himself, Mother Righteous is instead a clone of his wife, Rebecca. Like the other Essex clones, Mother Righteous was created to combat the impending arrival of Dominion, in her case through the study and mastery of the Mystic Arts.

Venom’s latest trip through the Multiverse gives Marvel’s premier symbiote a new host in the form of none other than the Sorcerer Supreme.

In recent months, Xavier and his fellow surviving mutant heroes have taken it upon themselves to attempt and subvert the rise of Dominion by traveling back in time and assassinating a young Moira MacTaggert. Though they hoped that killing Moira before her powers could activate would prevent Dominion from coming into existence, it would also cost them the creation of Krakoa as a mutant nation. This led to Xavier’s sudden apparent heel turn when, rather than gunning down Moira as intended, he turned his gun on Rachel Summers instead.
