Nightwing is Becoming the Worst Version of Batman – And He Knows It

The following contains major spoilers for Nightwing #114, on sale now from DC Comics.

Nightwing’s best instincts are becoming a serious problem. Specifically, by pushing him down the road toward becoming the worst version of Batman.

Nightwing #114 finds the titular hero spending what is, for him, an otherwise ordinary day patrolling the mean streets of Bludhaven. When Nightwing spots a thief attempting to escape down an alley, Nightwing doesn’t hesitate to give chase. Unfortunately, all Nightwing finds on the man is a rotisserie chicken, and he immediately recognizes that in this particular situation, his usual tactics are far more of a problem than they are any kind of solution.

Nightwing’s return to Bludhaven kicked off in a major way in the pages of 2023’s Nightwing #100 by Tom Taylor and an all-star team of artists including Bruno Redondo, Scott McDaniel, Rick Leonardi, Eddy Barrows, Javier Fernandez, Mikel Janín, Karl Story, Eber Ferreira, Caio Filipe, Joe Prado, Adriano Lucas. Upon the Titans taking the Justice League’s place as the world’s foremost superhero team, Nightwing not only relocated himself back to Bludhaven, but he also took all of Titans Tower and the team it is synonymous with along for the ride.

Since then, the Titans have played a key role in a multitude of major storylines. Possibly the most important of these in recent years was DC’s Night Terrors, which saw the heroes and villains of the DC Universe forced into a deep, nightmarish slumber by the villainous Insomnia. While the heroes were ultimately able to save the day and put a stop to Insomnia’s crusade of terror, these events led to Amanda Waller amassing more power than ever, as well as the introduction of the formerly enigmatic Doctor Hate.

Among the major threats facing Nightwing and the Titans within Bludhaven is the serial killer known as Heartless. Born Shelton Lyle, the boy who would become Heartless grew up in an ultra-wealthy home surrounded by the finest things life, and his callous father, had to offer. It wasn’t until after Shelton watched the Flying Graysons plummet to their deaths that he found any sort of real interest of his own. In the years that followed, Shelton dedicated himself to becoming a master manipulator before embarking on his career as a serial killer and cult leader.
