Iron Man’s Family Reunion is More Horrifying Than His Fight Against Orchis

The following contains major spoilers for Invincible Iron Man #17, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Tony Stark’s war against Orchis just landed him in the middle of an unnerving family reunion. It might even be worse than fighting Sentinels.

After an explosive encounter with Fei Long’s Star Sentinels and the inaugural battle of his own Sentinel Buster, the titular hero of Invincible Iron Man #17 awakens trapped in the wires and wreckage of his own massive armor. As the world around him comes into focus, Tony discovers he is far from alone, as both his biological and adoptive mother have been waiting for him to arrive. Or rather, the visions of them conjured by untold concussions and lifelong trauma have been waiting for him.

First seen in the pages of 1977’s Iron Man #104 by writer Bill Mantlo and artist George Tuska, Maria Stark was already married to Howard Stark when they adopted an infant Tony. For decades, Tony believed that Maria and Howard were his parents, with the former offering him constant love and reassurance in the face of the latter’s cruelty and callousness. Prior to adopting Tony, Maria gave birth to Arno, her son with Howard whom they kept secret by raising within the walls of their Stark Foundation Hospice.

Tony’s biological mother, Amanda Armstrong, wouldn’t make her first comic book appearance until 2016’s International Iron Man #5 by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev. A former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Amanda fell in love with her fellow agent Jude. Upon discovering that Jude had been a double agent for Hydra the entire time, she killed him before he could give away her position or endanger her mission. Tragically, Amanda also decided to give up the child she had conceived with Jude, believing that she would never be able to keep the child safe given her clandestine lifestyle.

Marvel’s Morlock tunnels make a surprising return as one of the last battlefields in the X-Men’s war against one of their worst enemies — Orchis.

Since the takeover of his company at the hands of Fei Long, Tony Stark has had a deep-seated hatred for the villain, who just so happens to be among Orchis’ human leadership. Not only has Fei Long used Stark’s technology to develop a new generation of mutant-hunting Sentinels, but he has lobbed various personal attacks upon Stark’s closest loved ones. This drove Iron Man to create his Model 72 armor and Sentinel Buster in secret, both of which have done more damage to Orchis’ mechanized armies than anyone was expecting.
