Cyclops Assembles Marvel’s Deadliest Team of Mutants

After the fall of Krakoa, mutants are hated and feared more than ever before, but there’s still hope. Cyclops (Scott Summers), assembles a new team of X-Men, so formidable that people will have to think twice about messing with mutants now.

According to Marvel, X-Men will be one of three flagship titles in the team’s “From The Ashes” Era. Jed MacKay (Avengers) will write the series, and comic extraordinaire Ryan Stegman will illustrate this new chapter of the X-Men story, which explores mutantkind’s future after the Krakoan age –in which most mutants lived in the island nation of Krakoa. In the aftermath, Cyclops assembles an extraordinary group which includes Psylocke, Magik, and perennial X-Man Beast. There will also be promising new group members such as Kid Omega and Temper (formerly Oya). “Powerhouses like Magneto and Juggernaut” will also join Cyclops’ formidable squad of mutants.

The X-Men’s latest era, “From The Ashes”, was first announced by long-time Marvel editor Tom Bervoort at a panel at South by Southwest (SXSW) titled “From the Ashes, the Future of the X-Men Revealed!” The three core titles will be MacKay and Stegman’s X-Men, Uncanny X-Men by Gail Simone and David Marquez, and Exceptional X-Men by Eve Ewing and Carmen Carnero. “[A]ll three titles carrying the name X-MEN are core X-MEN series—they all center around one of the major aspects of what the team has been about at different points,” explained Brevoort. “This is very much by design. We want to field a wide assortment of X-titles with different styles and tones and approaches, an X-MEN book for virtually any taste.”

The announcement of the upcoming X-Men debut issue was accompanied by three new variant covers. There will be two Psylocke character spotlights by J. Scott Campbell – which will also be available as a virgin variant cover — a hidden gem variant drawn by George Peréz, and a group cover by Tony Daniel. Daniel’s group cover features the Master of Magnetism sporting a new look. Magneto appears to be wearing his classic purple and red costume with a matching helmet, but he seems to have grown a white beard and mustache.

The Comedy Central animated series will star Community’s Danny Pudi.

The new look has sparked speculation about whether he’ll take on a mentorship role like Professor X. This would somewhat mirror his character arc in the new, and much-celebrated, animated series, X-Men ‘97, where, after the death of Xavier, his will dictates that Magneto will become the X-Men’s new leader.

X-Men #1 will go on sale on July 10.
