Major cocaine seizure on Jersey-registered boat in the Caribbean

More than £55m worth of cocaine has been seized from a Jersey-registered boat in the Caribbean, authorities have confirmed.

Jersey’s Attorney General Mark Temple KC gave officials permission to the French authorities to search the vessel, Maria Del Mar, which was about 200 miles (321km) south of Barbados on 26 February.

The Law Officers’ Department said more than 173 stone (1,100kg) of the Class A drug was found onboard, and valued it to have a Jersey street value of between £55m and £77m.

The anti-drug smuggling team arrested three Spanish nationals and one Colombian national onboard the vessel.

Mr Temple said Jersey was “keen to play its part in combatting illicit drug trafficking, wherever it takes place”.

He said: “We congratulate the French authorities on this successful operation and confirm that we will continue to assist them.

“The drugs in this case would have done enormous damage had they reached their intended markets.”
