Greetings chess players! My name is Chris Torres and this is my daily chess musing for Sunday, February 18th, 2024.

Chess is often perceived as a solitary pursuit, with players hunched over a board deep in thought, making strategic moves in isolation. However, this is a misconception, as chess players are very much part of a tight-knit and vibrant chess community. This is especially noticeable at US Amateur Team West Championship where the team camaraderie not only enriches the chess-playing experience but also demonstrates that chess is as much a social activity as it is a mental one, bringing people together across boundaries and fostering a sense of belonging and connection.

This President’s Day Weekend I enjoyed seeing familiar faces and making new friends at the 2024 US Amateur Team West Championship in Milpitas, California. I spent hours helping players learn more from their games at my analysis table. I also took many photos in the playing hall and at the award ceremony. The entire experience was remarkably pleasant due to the comfortable tournament site, excellent event organization and highly experienced tournament directors.

Please enjoy my photos from the 2024 US Amateur Team West chess tournament. If you would like a particular photo emailed to you, please send an email request to [email protected] and reference the photo number from my tournament gallery. Also, remember to keep sending me your games for possible inclusion in the CalChess Journal and an upcoming Chess Life article on the USATW.

And with that, I bid you adieu until next time. My name is Chris Torres and this has been my Daily Chess Musing. Before you go, please remember to hit the like and subscribe buttons.
