But the company’s retail empire appears to be crumbling. The chain’s Oakland location closed months ago and, as of March, at least three more locations have permanently closed, leaving employees and creditors in a lurch, according to CRB Monitor.

The abrupt closures come as California’s cannabis industry struggles to survive, with massive distributors going belly-uptax revenues sinking and dispensaries closing across the state.

The shuttered High Times dispensaries leave hundreds of thousands of dollars of unpaid bills in their wakes. The San Bernardino dispensary owed $103,000 in taxes as of September 2023, according to records obtained by CRB Monitor. High Times also owes money to the venture fund ExWorks, which loaned the company millions of dollars in 2017 and again in 2018, according to SEC filings obtained by CRB Monitor.

ExWorks, the state of California and the construction company behind the San Bernardino and Blythe dispensaries have all filed liens against the company in an attempt to claim the dispensaries’ remaining assets to cover unpaid debts, according to CRB Monitor.

High Times did not respond to an SFGATE request for comment before the time of publication.
