Former president Donald Trump announced on Monday that abortion should be decided by the states rather than at the federal level.
“The states will determine by vote, or legislation, or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land – in this case, the law of the state,” Trump said in a video. “Many states will be different. Many states will have a different number of weeks… at the end of the day it is all about the will of the people.”
Per Fox News, he previously told reporters last week at a campaign shop in Michigan that he would make a statement on abortion in the coming week after he was asked about Florida’s controversial six-week abortion ban, which is expected to go into effect soon.
Trump also said he was proud of playing a part in overturning Roe V. Wade, noting that legal scholars on “both sides” supported the decision.
“The Republican Party should always be on the side of the miracle of life and the side of mothers, fathers and their beautiful babies. IVF is an important part of that,” Trump said.
Majorie Dannenfelser, President of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life, said she was “deeply disappointed” in Trump’s announcement on Monday.
“Saying the issue is ‘back to the states’ cedes the national debate to Democrats who are working relentlessly to enact legislation mandating abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy,” Dannenfelser added. “If successful, they will wipe out states’ rights.”
In 2022, the conservative majority of the Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe V. Wade ruling which returned the issue back to the states.
According to The Guardian, President Joe Biden denounced Trump’s comments warning that if he is elected as president in November, then he and “MAGA Republicans in Congress” call for a national abortion ban, which Trump will sign into law.
Biden contended that he is “determined” to restore federal abortion protections if he and Vice President Kamala Harris get a “Democratic Congress”.
