The Good Complaint

A complaint directed against a legitimate problem in the right way can be the starting point for changing a problem that few people thought could be changed in the first place.

Think about how to intelligently describe what the problem is, why you feel it is unfair, and how you hope it can be fixed.

Christians, even in situations where you feel like you aren’t able to change problems you see in some sphere of life, issuing a complaint can still make a difference. Many times, a person feels upset by a problem they see but do not hear anyone else talking about it and feel no one would listen to them anyway. However, a complaint directed against a legitimate problem can alert others who had only thought about the issue until that time that other people wanted to see change as well.

A complaint can be in a written form that is sent to a news agency, for example. A person does not need to be socially powerful or be in a managerial position to write a complaint and send it out by email. A complaint can also be a thoughtful conversation with one other person who talks to someone else. A good complaint is directed against a real problem and not simply frustration at needing to work or needing to follow rules, although unfair work conditions and unfair rules are a cause for a legitimate complaint.

Public workplaces where people are reprimanded for wishing customers a Merry Christmas in December could be a cause for a legitimate complaint. However, in issuing a complaint against a problem you see, do not allow any anger you may feel to cause you to write or say anything vengeful. Think about how to intelligently describe what the problem is, why you feel it is unfair, and how you hope it can be fixed.
