The whole performance was dynamite. Riding on the ultra excitement and buzz around him right after the Thriller release: the audio, the voices, the clothes, everything. Perfect emotional progression from the fun songs I Want You Back, Love You Save, to the emotional songs Never Can Say Goodbye, I'll Be There. Finally ending with Michael's solo Billie Jean, focusing on just him. The audience energy and his dancing was fantastic. This was his first "moonwalk" and not as polished as later in the 80s/90s, but still a defining moment. The triple spin at 3:41 during Love You Save is also a great moment. Altogether a fantastic performance & show! This was a textbook landmark moment for Michael.

Am from n.c in 1969 the only two things I wanted for Christmas was the Jackson five album an some cowboy gun's an I got both of them now in 2024 I still have the Jackson five album.
I remember watching this in '83 – I had graduated high school in June 1982 – in my living room and just being totally enthralled with the whole set …. the J5 had always been amazing, even in the beginning, and they had the whole art of public performance and singing down pat …. they truly made it all in to an art form, and they did it stupendously.
I've been a fan of MJs and the Jackson Five since the early days. I've read up on their history and it is heartbreaking. All the guys, but especially Michael, paid a heavy price for fame. Michael was pushed hard from the age of five. No wonder he went sideways eventually. As such I really prefer his old stuff when he was still black and his style felt more pure. I did hear that his voice had never reached potential because he was driven too hard too young. Ruined his vocal cords to a certain extent. Imagine how much more he would have been . But then as I say this, his voice was not the most important part of his performance and that was probably built from his entire lifetime of performing.
