The bible tells us to judge not lest we be judged (Matthew 7:1). God is the only one capable of judging correctly as He is able to see the heart. When we judge we tend to project onto the other person our own short comings and biases. My mother had a saying, “ we judge others by ourselves”. In other words, we project onto others our own approach to things.
Have you ever been misjudged by someone? A situation where you did something from a pure motive only to have an ulterior motive ascribed to your actions? It is especially hurtful when the judgment comes from someone who should know you better. If it comes from a friend or family member it can be especially hurtful. Unfortunately, sometimes the person will also not accept your explanation of the motives behind the action. This is a type of offense. The bible tells us that offenses will come (Luke 17:1). It is something we will experience as we live our lives.
Think of the way Jesus was treated: Even though He went about doing nothing but good, many rejected Him because of their own beliefs and agenda. When He healed the sick, they accused Him of profaning the Sabbath, if he did it on a Sabbath day. When He cast out devils, they accused Him of casting them out by the power of satan. So, we see examples of judgment being meted out based on someone else’s personal agenda or ignorance.
This is why, we are commanded not to judge each other. Since we are unable to see the heart of another person, we run the risk of misjudging them. Does this mean that we should not consider the actions of another person wrong. It does not mean this, at all. What the bible addresses is how we should respond when faced with an act of wrongdoing on someone else’s part. This is why we need a Savior: Turning the other cheek, forgiving 70 X 7, if our cloak is taken away giving our coat also; as we are instructed to do in the bible; are not the responses of the flesh. We can only hope to accomplish these responses as we walk in the Holy Spirit.
There is a place for judgment in the government. It allows those who transgress the laws to be punished for it. Laws are in place to keep order and deter evil. When we live by and are guided by the Holy Spirit, we are not likely to break human laws. The only time this may happen is if we must obey a command of God that contradicts the laws of man.
The bible tells us that love covers a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8). It tells us not to avenge ourselves (Romans 12:17-19). Those who are a part of God’s kingdom on earth are called to a much higher standard of living. One which is governed by love for others.
