Most people who attempt to start a business usually have a unique skill and they would like to benefit from that skill instead of working for someone else. For example, the widget maker makes great widgets. He gets complemented on his widgets all the time. He has requests from friends and family for widgets after he gets done making widgets at work. We are bombarded with advertising for it, “be your own boss”, “no experience needed”, “work from home” or my personal favorite “flip houses with no money down”. I have been involved in real estate for more than a decade and I am yet to meet a “professional house flipper” but it seems that there are many house flipping gurus, TV shows and seminars available for anyone looking to get starting with that amazing opportunity that no one else wants for some reason. Essentially the advertisers are just screaming “free money here, I got your free money here” and then just exploiting the next sucker who bites. Makes me think of selling shovels during the gold rush. With experience, I found the way to avoid these and pretty much every other scam on the planet is to never forget “There is no free money”. Comedian Steven Wright has a great line that stuck with me “Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it.” Starting a business quickly becomes a mind filling whirlwind of issues.
Experience Before You Need It!
Franchisees receive the experience of running an organization before they even open the doors. When the widget maker ventures out he expects to make widgets but quickly learns that making a widget and running a widget making business are two vastly different things. The widget was all that mattered and now there is accounting, legal issues, marketing, customer relations, running a website, answering phones, ordering supplies, tracking inventory, marketing, sales etc. Making widgets becomes the smallest part of the equation. Those who purchase a franchise with a proven business model receive the best of both worlds. The value of upfront training and ongoing support provides a franchisee a greater chance at success and foresight to scale while simultaneously owning your own business with less risk.
