60-bed Milngavie care home to make its grand entrance

A Milngavie car dealership has reached the end of the road with plans for its demolition and replacement with a 60-bed care home.

UNUM Partnership and Northcare will cater to the rapidly ageing population with tailored accommodation for residents aged 75 and over in two-bedroom wings.

In their design statement, the architects wrote: “Protruding bays and articulated masonry help break up the perceived mass of the building by introducing depth to the elevations.

“Intricate horizontal rebates within the sandstone introduce a subtlety that breaks the mass down further and also brings an element of texture and relief to the facade. These are reflective of the sandstone detailing found on many Victorian buildings. Typically aligned with window heads and cills, they bring a formal rationale to the elevations, whilst additional rebates between the ground floor windows create a subtle plinth.”

The £10m build is earmarked for a corner plot of a retail park on Main Street, standing as a garden ‘pavilion’ with two floors of accommodation topped by an entertainment suite clad in aluminium rainscreen.

Housed within a contemporary sandstone block the accommodation below is dominated by a fully glazed two-storey high main entrance framed by a stone architrave.
