With so many of us keen to take full advantage of the opportunity to once again explore our fabulous state and the upcoming school holidays we thought we would share some of our favourite Sunshine Coast secret spots to visit. We’ll help you avoid the crowds and discover some of the lesser-known spots that this incredible destination has to offer.

When you think of the Sunshine Coast you probably think amazing beaches, great boutique shops, good camping spots and fabulous restaurants. It ticks all of those boxes and more! What you may not realise is that the Sunshine Coast also has some of the most Instagram-worthy scenery in the world! Think we’re exaggerating? Read on…

Lake Weyba

Just 15 minutes from the hustle and bustle of super stylish Noosa, Lake Weyba is a stunning, serene, saltwater oasis that is perfect for a relaxing family picnic, a spot of fishing or connecting with the local wildlife (the kangaroos just love basking in the sun on the edge of the lake!).

Covering 9.6 square km and at approximately 1 metre deep, it’s also an ideal spot to jump in a kayak and explore the surrounding natural beauty. And if you choose to stay close by you’ll be treated to the most stunning sunrise and sunset as well as a view of the stars unobscured by background light.

Kondalilla Falls

One of the most spectacular and easily accessible waterfalls in the Sunshine Coast hinterland near Montville, Kondalilla Falls is simply breathtaking! On your trip through the scenic Blackall range, you may encounter some local wildlife while on a walk including wallabies, platypus and goannas.

kondalilla falls

Surrounded by bunya pines and areas of lush rainforest, the Kondalilla Falls trail is the perfect spot to go for a picnic or even camp overnight. You can even enjoy a dip in the natural rock pools at the base of the falls.

Moffat Beach

With its own unique character, Moffat Beach’s quaint cafes and restaurants are complemented by its chic accommodation and famed surf break. A perfect location for a family weekend away or day out, it’s even a great place to sit back and watch the ocean to take some time for yourself. Within walking distance from Caloundra, Moffat Beach is a dreamy and lush destination and possibly one of the best beaches the Sunshine Coast has to offer.

The Wharf Mooloolaba

When thinking of Mooloolaba, it’s easy to think about the alluring beaches and the strip of shops along the beachfront. A lesser-known gem is the Wharf, just by the Sealife Aquarium. Overlooking the Mooloolaba river, this is an epicentre for local fashion boutiques, cafes and restaurants and the ‘jump-off’ point for visitors to participate in various water-based activities such as whale-watching, diving and snorkelling.

Within walking distance to the surf club and beach, it is a must-do for anyone considering taking a trip to Mooloolaba.

Mt Ngungun

Part of the scenic Glass House Mountains National Park, Mount Ngungun makes for a fun family day out in nature. Activities such as hiking and bird watching are a great way to be more connected to nature and encourage yourself or your family to put down your phones for a few hours. The duration of the hike is approximately 2 hours long but the views of nearby Mt Tibrogargan on the route to the top and the 360-degree panorama of the coast and hinterland at the summit are just sensational!

As we begin to emerge from COVID-19 ‘lockdown’ and explore areas closer to home, you might be surprised what our own ‘backyard’ has to offer! So what are you waiting for… get out there and enjoy these Sunshine Coast secret spots that the ‘locals’ know and love!
