Health authority declares two more COVID-19 outbreaks in B.C. long-term care homes

SURREY, B.C. — A Vancouver-area health authority has declared COVID-19 outbreaks at two long-term care homes in Surrey, B.C.

Fraser Health says a resident and staff member at Suncreek Village and two workers at Guildford Seniors Village have tested positive for the virus.

The health authority says it’s working to determine who may have been exposed to COVID-19 and is screening residents and staff at both facilities twice a day for the virus.

Dr. Roger Wong, a clinical professor of geriatric medicine at the University of British Columbia’s faculty of medicine, says seniors are at an increased risk of getting infected when community transmission remains high even if care homes take all precautions.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control’s website shows active COVID-19 infections in 14 long-term care homes as of Thursday.

More than 80 per cent of the deaths in the province have been among people over the age of 70.

Wong says every senior lost due to COVID-19 is one too many.

“It is heartbreaking to see those who have contributed so much to our society going down as a result of the pandemic,” he said.

“Each person represents a precious and full life story to the family and to our society.”

COVID-19: 17 new cases, seven outbreaks in Huron-Perth’s final update of 2020

Five of the new cases reported Thursday are in North Perth, another of the region’s most active areas. The other two are in North Huron and St. Marys.

There are also 17 recoveries in the latest update, leaving the total number of active cases in the region at 82. Those include 26 in North Perth, 16 in South Huron, and 13 in Stratford.

Outbreaks in healthcare settings appear to be one of the driving forces behind the region’s COVID-19 caseload. Although Exeter Villa’s long-term care home is currently experiencing the most active cases, four other long-term care homes in Huron and Perth counties are under outbreak conditions.

Outbreaks at Cedarcroft Place retirement home in Stratford and Listowel Memorial Hospital continued Thursday without additional cases being reported.

Three people with COVID-19 in the region are hospitalized.

Huron Perth public health’s next update will be Jan. 2.

Across the rest of Ontario, 3,328 new COVID-19 infections were added to the provincial total on New Year’s Eve, a record daily high. The province is also experiencing a record-high number of hospitalizations — 1,235 — including 337 people in intensive care and 210 on ventilators.

The province reported 56 additional COVID-19 deaths on Thursday.

The new case total includes 888 new cases in Toronto, 431 in Peel, 418 in York Region, 257 in Windsor-Essex County,  and 194 in Ottawa.

The wave of new infections comes before the impact of the holiday season on COVID-19 transmission will be fully felt, with the virus’s incubation period taking between one and 14 days, and testing/results requiring additional time.
