FIVE KEYS TO THE GAME

1. Pettersson’s promise: A highlight-reel goal between the legs with his back to the goalie Sunday — and another with a one-timer howitzer on the power play — bode well for the centre, who has nine points (3-6) in his last 10 games. He’s hard on himself and now harder on the opposition.

2. McDavid’s magic: After being blanked in the season opener against the Canucks, the Oilers’ captain exploded for a hat trick in a 15-minute span to cap the two-game series. Limiting time and space doesn’t apply to the high-speed, high-octane NHL scoring leader. He’s that good that often.

3. Demko or Holtby? Braden Holtby allowed two questionable goals Sunday in a 4-3 overtime loss to Winnipeg. One thought is to go right back to the veteran Tuesday to redeem himself. The other is Thatcher Demko is being groomed as the starter, has a better GAA and saves percentage, and should get the cage.

4. The joy of Jesse: A happy player isn’t front-page news. However, when it’s Jesse Puljujarvi, the often disgruntled fourth overall pick in the 2016 draft, it’s a big deal. Playing with McDavid doesn’t hurt and neither does a fresh start with coach Dave Tippett. His five goals have come in the last eight games.

5. View to a kill: Even minus injured penalty-kill specialist Tyler Motte, the Canucks have killed 17 of the last 19 power plays and have moved into the top 10. The timing couldn’t be better. The Oilers’ fifth-ranked outfit has struck for six PP goals in the last five outings and went 3-for-5 Saturday.

Job scenario improving, says Hebbar


Minister for Labour Shivaram Hebbar on Friday said the companies holding placement drives had offered a ray of hope for the jobless youth as the COVID-19 pandemic had triggered job cuts and many employed youths had lost their jobs during the pandemic.

Speaking after inaugurating a job mela at the Dasara Exhibition Grounds here, the Minister said the pandemic-induced job losses were not only confined to the State but across the country.

But, in recent days, many companies have started hiring, offering job positions to the unemployed youth.

The job scenario in the State has improved, he said, adding that the situation was limping back to normalcy after the pandemic badly impacted the life and economy since last year.

“The companies are coming up with new job offers, showing progress in the job market and the youth should make best use of the opportunities,” he advised.

Mr. Hebbar said his department was bringing new reforms and changes in the existing laws for the protection of workers and their rights.

A large number of youth thronged the Dasara exhibition grounds since Friday morning aspiring for the jobs at the mela which was organised under the support of the district administration, the District Employment Exchange, the Department of Industrial Training and Employment, Skill Development, and the Department of Labour.

As many as 110 companies participated in the mela and the organisers said the companies gave offers based on the candidates’ educational qualification and skills.

S.A. Ramdas, MLA, who initiated the job fair, said he had come across many youth losing their jobs during the pandemic.

During his tour of his constituency as part of “K.R. Kshetra Yatra,” he learnt youth in many households in the constituency had either no jobs or lost jobs, prompting him to hold the mela. He said those who haven’t got jobs at the mela need not have to worry as requisite skills would be imparted to them to make them “job-ready” soon.

On the occasion, the Minister handed over job offers in a symbolic way to some candidates.

Yathindra Siddaramaiah, MLA, MUDA Chairman H.V. Rajiv, Karnataka Exhibition Authority Chairman Hemanth Kumar Gowda and others were present.

candidates share plans for improving Hamilton and Goldsmith Hall buildings – Trinity News


During a hustings event hosted by the faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), Professors Linda Doyle, Linda Hogan, and Jane Ohlmeyer were challenged on how they would improve facilities on campus were they to be elected provost.

Candidates faced a question that claimed that the Hamilton and Goldsmith Hall are “not fit for purpose” and were asked how they would improve these spaces and otherwise enhance the student experience.

Professor Doyle said that she would start with a refurbishment of the buildings, similar to that which recently took place in the Arts Building, stating that “a relatively modest investment can lead to big improvement”. She added that there is “much digital infrastructure missing from our university”, stating that working on this would require “outside investment”. Doyle also committed to delivering a student centre “over the lifetime” of her time as provost.

Professor Ohlmeyer stated that she thought the refurbishment of the Arts Building was “okay”, but she “wouldn’t necessarily” use it as a model for improving the Hamilton and Goldsmith Hall. Touching on what has become a central theme of the campaign, as a position shared by all candidates, Professor Ohlmeyer said that she would reduce student to staff ratios, stating that this was of primary concern for improving the student experience.

Professor Hogan stated that Goldsmith Hall is in a “shocking state” that “absolutely needs to be addressed” by a “radical refurbishment”. Hogan stated that there are “opportunities for significant transformation of our existing space”, but added that “more space is needed”.

In response to a question about where the candidates might derive funding for research, Professor Ohlmeyer responded that having conversations with policymakers and other potential funding sources has become a “crowded landscape” among higher education institutions. Instead, she urged that higher and further education speak with “one voice”.

Additionally, Ohlmeyer highlighted the importance of engaging with a series of enterprises, including Trinity alumni, in order to derive funding.

Professor Hogan added that higher education as a whole is a “radically underfunded system” and that it is important that the public and the government realise this fact. The €40 million that Trinity is currently allotted for funding research, she argued, “needs to be doubled”.

Regarding engaging with the Irish Universities Association (IUA) for funding, she stated that “we cannot be just one more lobby group”. Instead, she argued, universities through the IUA should engage with the government “through the contribution we make”.

Finally, Professor Doyle responded by highlighting the fact that “we don’t have a consistent engagement” in terms of research funding; her promise would be to build this engagement.

Her plan for a research policy interface, she claimed, would offer “enormous opportunity to deepen that engagement”. Through this, she would request €800 million from government in an aim to upgrade facilities.

The candidates were also asked about the “bureaucratic overload” faced by academic staff and how they would reduce this. Professor Ohlmeyer said looking around the country there were examples of universities being run far better at the administrative level. Ohlmeyer said she would first focus on the Academic Registry and Human Resources departments, stating “that’s where the greatest problems are”. She noted that College has “chronically underinvested” in the administrative supports and systems.

Professor Hogan said that she would not implement a “large scale administrative reform project”, adding that these “don’t work”. She said that stripping back the bureaucracy would require “proper diagnosis, attention to detail, integration of systems, and a change of culture”.

Professor Doyle argued that Trinity “loves bureaucracy” and that the current attitude was, “Why have 2 steps when you can have 22?”. Doyle stated that there was a need for a “systematic change” of Trinity’s digital platforms as well as providing training for people in navigating these systems. She stated that she would embark on a “simplification agenda”.

The candidates were asked about their plans for cross-faculty initiatives, with the question citing the examples of the E3 Research Institute and the Cancer Research Initiative. Professor Doyle answered first stating that she is “completely committed” to those two initiatives. She highlighted the potential for development of the Trinity East campus and the opportunities that initiatives such as these present in “allowing clinicians and scientists to work side by side.”

Professor Ohlmeyer spoke next and also highlighted the “phenomenal opportunities” that these initiatives present. She expressed plans to “encourage colleagues to co-teach” across faculties, saying that at the moment they are “punished” for doing so, when they should be rewarded. She continued by saying: “very few universities can get this right but I absolutely believe that Trinity can.”

Professor Hogan continued the discussion emphasizing her commitment to both the Cancer Institute and E3. She stated her plans to empower academic leadership to ensure people have “the authority, the truth and the bandwidth” to carry out these and other cross faculty initiatives. However she also stated that she is “as committed to individual PI research” as she is to larger cross-faculty research initiatives.

This afternoon’s STEM forum was the last in a series of hustings events hosted by the three faculties within College.

The $10.4 million in funding will go towards improving patient care

Canadians benefit from a health care system that is informed by research evidence—and by the voices of patients and caregivers. That is why it is essential that the government invest in patient-oriented research, which engages patients as partners throughout the research process.

The Honourable Yukon Hospitals Get A $10.4 Million Boost To Patient CareMinister of Health, and the Honourable Larry Bagnell, Member of Parliament for Yukon, on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Canada’s Minister of Health, announced a combined investment of $10.4 million in funding and in-kind contributions to establish a Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) Support for People and Patient-Oriented Research and Trials (SUPPORT) Unit in the Yukon.

With this important investment, the first of its kind in Yukon, the SPOR SUPPORT Unit will create and nurture an environment for research that incorporates patients, communities, researchers, care providers and decision-makers. Both Indigenous and Western ways of knowing will be combined to help build a sustainable, accessible and equitable health care system and bring positive changes in the health of people living in the North.

Patients in Yukon will benefit, as the SPOR SUPPORT Unit will ensure that research has direct impacts on their lives in ways that are important to them by making them partners in research and giving them a say in which topics are researched. Yukon University will host the Unit, and will bring together all partners to support and facilitate patient-oriented research initiatives throughout the territory.

The Yukon SUPPORT Unit is funded through Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR), a pan-Canadian initiative dedicated to integrating research into patient care. SPOR is led by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research in collaboration with a variety of partners.

Improving Fire Safety Standards through stakeholder engagement and consultation


Amendment No.1 to I.S. 3218 sees the National Standards Authority of Ireland engaging with industry experts to amend a widely used Irish Standard for fire detection and alarm systems.

Fire Detection and Alarm Systems are unique among building services in that their primary purpose is the protection of human life.  Therefore, it is essential they are designed, installed, commissioned,  and maintained correctly.  I.S. 3218 provides clear guidelines that, when applied correctly, can support compliance with the relevant provisions of Technical Guidance Document Part B.

We spoke to Joe Walsh, Chairperson of the NSAI Technical Committee 16 Working Group 2, about Amendment No. 1 and its importance. Joe works for Siemens Ireland and was recently awarded an NSAI 1997 Award in recognition of his significant contribution to the Standards work of NSAI over many years. 

Why was it important to develop Amendment No.1 to I.S. 3218:2013?

Standards need to evolve as products and their applications change with the ever-increasing advances of technology.  Before the introduction of Amendment No.1, there was some misunderstanding in the Fire Safety Industry about exactly what was included in the scope of I.S. 3218.

While the cause and effect strategy programmed into the Fire Detection and Alarm control panels include many functions of the Fire Safety Strategy such as smoke ventilation, lifts, roller shutters etc these were not catered for in I.S. 3218.  This was causing confusion among building owners regarding the responsibility for servicing and coordination of such ancillary devices : often the misconception being the fire alarm servicing company was solely responsible.  

What stakeholders were involved?

A sub group of NSAI Technical Committee 16 Working Group 2 was established and consisted of a wide variety of industry representatives including national regulators. Facilitated by NSAI, industry experts considered the issues and determined that clarification on the inclusion/exclusion of ancillary devices in the servicing certificate should be addressed. 

What are the main changes included in Amendment No.1 to I.S. 3218:2013?

There were a series of edits made across the standard, the majority of which related to Clause 9 User responsibilities.  This was revised to clarify the responsibilities of all parties involved in the process.  To show this, a new informative one-page diagram Annex N was added.  This clearly identifies input and output functions of ancillary equipment included in the Fire Safety Strategy and which of these are in scope and out of scope of I.S. 3218.

Annex D1 is now an Annual Cert, with more emphasis on the availability of the system records e.g. Design, Commissioning, installation certs and as installed drawings.  

The details of the works required for the Annual Cert are now included in the periodic Service Inspection and Test reports.  

What are the benefits of using I.S. 3218?

In addition to supporting compliance with relevant provisions of Technical Guidance Document Part B, I.S. 3218 provides clear guidelines that, when applied correctly enables the system owner to maintain high levels of performance throughout the lifecycle of the system.  This will ensure confidence that if activated, it means a Fire has been detected rather than a false alarm 

So, what is next for is I.S. 3218?

The Current Edition was published in 2013 and amendment no. 1 added in 2019. It has become a comprehensive document since it was first published in 1989 with multiple cross referencing between clauses.    NSAI Technical Committee 16 Working Group 2 are currently drafting the next revision of IS 3218, with publication planned for the final quarter of 2021.  It will be based on CEN (European Committee for Standardisation), Technical Specification 54-part 14 (Fire detection and alarm systems – Guidelines for planning, design, installation, commissioning, use and maintenance) and will include local requirements deemed essential for the Irish market.

Jabra Elite 75t Review: Improving over time


The Jabra Elite 75t was released in late 2019. Yet, even after a year since its release, it is still very much relevant. Since its launch, the Jabra Elite 75t has seen an update to introduce Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and improvements to its calling functionality. But with a lot of True Wireless (TWS) solutions now available in the market, how does it stack up?

Design and build quality

Compared to other TWS headphones, the pair of Elite 75t is small. Jabra has done well to take care of ergonomics with the headphones fitting quite well in your ear. Out of the box, you get various rubber seals depending on your ear size, but the standard one installed out of the box worked fine for us.

The small size is ideal for a minimalist look in the ear

For a natural seal in the ear, you need to slightly rotate the earbuds locking them in place. This allows them to stay in your ear even during intense exercise sessions. Furthermore, the IP55 water and dust resistance goes a long way to make these durable. However, one complaint we have about the design is the button placement. Its quite a large function button which makes it too easy to press at times. This leads to many accidental presses which become annoying when they add up.

While the headphone’s build is plastic, we do not mind it too much

Aside from this, the Elite 75t has a fairly simple build. The earbuds are made of plastic and have a glossy finish that attracts smudges quite easily. Of course, this helps with keeping them lightweight hence we are not too bothered by this choice from Jabra. But we wish the ‘L’ and ‘R’ labels on the earbuds were clearer. As for the headphone’s case, it is made of a similar material. We suspect it will accumulate wear and tear over time but are happy with its design.

For the most part, the case is great and supports wireless charging as well

The case is able to stand up and offers a magnetic lid. Moreover, the way it opens makes it comfortable to quickly access the earbuds from inside. The hinge can feel a bit cheap but we do not think this will be a major problem in the long run. Likewise, the Type-C USB port for charging the case also makes the Elite 75t future proof.

Functionality

We touched on the Jabra Elite 75t’s functionality earlier with its function button. But looking at the headphones in more detail, they connect to accessories via Bluetooth. A big advantage it has is that it is able to connect to two devices simultaneously, which allowed up to switch between out computer and smartphone seamlessly. But, with only AAC support, those looking for aptX support will be left a bit disappointed.

You can use the function buttons for pairing and interaction

To pair the headphones, you simply keep the function buttons pressed for 3 seconds. The pairing process is simple with the earbuds flashing blue alongside a voice prompt to find the pair from your device’s Bluetooth menu. We also recommend you pair up the Jabra Elite 75t with its Sound+ mobile application. This allows you to personalise the listening experience, tailoring it to your ears.

If you intend on using the Jabra Elite 75t, installing the Sound+ application is a must

The application is extremely useful and responsive. It not only gives you information about the battery life of the earbuds and case but also ways to personalise the sound experience, which we will discuss more in a later section. Aside from connectivity, you also get some controls via the Jabra Elite 75t. You can hold the left function key to increase volume whereas holding the right function key decreases it. But because this does not allow granular control, we think volume control directly from your device will be a better experience.

You can customise the gestures via each button

When listening to audio, the earbuds also support pausing when one of them is removed. But unfortunately, you cannot use only one earbud to do the same. Other gestures include a single tap, double tap and triple tap of the left earbud to toggle between sound modes, skip a track or return to a previous track respectively. A single tap on the right earbud pauses or plays content whereas a double tap triggers your assistant. You are able to to tweak these via the Sound+ application according to your preference though.

Sound quality

We think with the Jabra Elite 75t is designed for working out more than analysing minute patterns in sound. So if you are a true audiophile looking for such details, you may be disappointed. As someone who is not an audiophile, I could still notice a few let downs with sound. Where the Jabra Elite 75t shines is in mid-tones. They are clear and the listening experience is great. However, the headphones have an inherent property to over-emphasise bass. Especially with its music preset on ‘Bass boost’, the overpowering bass leads to a lot of loss in detail. For the high-tones, it is a mixed bag. In 80 per-cent of music, it is not a problem but sometimes, the sound can outright be unpleasant with extended listening leading to headaches.

For most listening, we kept the Elite 75t on its ‘Smooth’ preset

With the Jabra+ application, you have a good chance to tune audio according to your ears. For example, the music presets we talked about. Out of the ones curated, ‘Smooth’ works the best for a wide variety of scenarios. You can also personalise your experiences with ANC and equaliser tuning. This seems to help a fair bit but we felt ANC was a bit harsh at times. It caused pressure in the ears which made extended use without listening to audio extremely uncomfortable. To tackle this, we wish the amount of ANC could be toggled but unfortunately that is not the case.

Active Noise Cancellation can become a bit overpowering at times

The good thing about the Jabra Elite 75t is that it works fairly well without ANC too. The natural seal of the earbuds is great in that aspect and you even have a ‘HearThrough’ option. This allows you to listen to your surroundings without removing the earbuds which can come in handy during conversations, accessible via a simple tap on the left earbud’s function button as mentioned earlier.

Battery life

You will not be too disappointed with the battery life on the Jabra Elite 75t. With ANC turned off, you can expect 6-7 hours of usage on a single charge. With ANC turned on, this will drop to 3-4 hours. The earbuds have helpful lights on their exterior which light up in green, orange and red signifying battery levels. For the case too, the exterior LED light is helpful to understand its battery levels.

Light indicators for the battery of the case and earbuds are well placed

With a fully charged case, you can recharge the earbuds 4 times before having to charge the case. Charging the earbuds takes 30-40 minutes when inside the case whereas the case itself charges in 1 hour 30 minutes. This is much faster than what Jabra specifies although it may be the case because we are using a Huawei 40W Supercharging brick. For those who prefer wireless charging, newer variants of the Elite 75t support this as well.

Conclusion

For long term usage, the Jabra Elite 75t offers a good experience. If you want to be able to connect to up to two devices and listen to casual multimedia, there is nothing wrong with the earbuds. Moreover, it offers a great layer of ruggedness with its IP-rating and for 95 per-cent of the audience, it will be a good fit when working out. The only drawback with the Elite 75t is its lack of aptX support and average sound quality, which may not be enough to satisfy the demands of a true audiophile. But with its current feature set and constant support from Jabra, it should be in your list of products to consider if you are in the market for a TWS pair of headphones.
