Review: Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Nuit Blanche

Is there ever a product that you just want to get because of the packaging?

Lots, I know LOL!

But if packaging tugs at your purse-strings, then the Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Nuit Blanche will have them doing flip-flops. That white cover with black trim is absolutely gorgeous!

Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Nuit Blanche

The Rouge Allure Velvet is not a new line, as it is Chanel’s nod to matte lipstick. As someone who isn’t a fan of matte lipsticks due to their drying texture (for the most part), I have found these ones from Chanel the only ones to work for me.

The colours are pigmented without being garish, and they are not a flat matte colour and texture, but is a luminous matte, rather like how velvet cloth has a matte appearance, but also has a sheen that keeps it looking plush.

In this limited edition range of Rouge Allure Velvet Nuit Blanche, there are 8 limited edition colours housed in pristine white packaging.

The colours are said to reflect each hour of the night, from 00:00 to 07:00, a colour for every hour.

I was gifted 4 colours by the brand.

  • 00:00 – Described as a Sienna Red, this is a browned red that Chanel says kicks off a night of promise. It is a colour that is wearable for most skin tones, and isn’t too bold.
  • 01:00 – Described as a brick orange, this looks like a warm red in the tube but applies a red-orange. This is not a colour I usually wear as it is a little too warm for my skin tone. But if you have deeper skin tone, or a golden, warm skin tone, this will be a lovely shade of red on you
  • 02:00 – In tube it looks like a bright red, and is described as an orange red. However, I find that it applies with a cool raspberry undertone, which is flattering on me and looks youthful.
  • 06:00 – described as a burnished rosewood, 06:00 to my eyes have a berry tint to it. It is more berry toned in person than you see in the photo above. At one time, this would be a colour I enjoy wearing, when I was in my darker lip phase. These days, I prefer to go for something brighter and lighter as it is a colour that looks more youthful.

The texture is as lovely as I remember it to be. I have been mostly using lipstick from my collection during all this time without many new releases, so I have to admit that having some new injections of colour and texture into my collection has been refreshing.

I like that the colours are pigmented without being garish, and it is not so opaque that it looks like a film over the lips. I now have a much more casual and relaxed lifestyle, so when I wear lipstick, it is primarily for events (outdoors) so for me, it is important that it is one that looks good, and lasts a decent amount of time, and fades without being patchy. For me, the Rouge Allure Velvet ticks those boxes.

It is also nice to be able to pull out a fancy white lipstick tube, that looks and feels hefty and solid, for touch-ups. Not having the luxury of being in indoor, air-conditioned events very much anymore, a lipstick that can last when I’m sweating buckets under the sun is a good addition to my collection.

However, I will be the first to admit that the colours aren’t anything more exciting than what is already available in the Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet range of lipsticks. It is a fairly comprehensive range as it stands, so what these 8 colours add to it is minimal.

Anyone looking to buy this from the Nuit Blanche range will mostly be doing so for the fancy white tube cover – and truthfully, there should be no shame in admitting that 😛

This coffret of the 4 colours you see here is available for sale at RM872, although I would personally get the colours individually, as not all the 4 colours are flattering to everyone. Incidentally, it is cheaper to get the colours individually too (RM218/ US$50 each) ! 😛

If matte lipstick is your thing, and you want something that lasts but is not an intense flat matte, but one with a hint of shine to it, to highlight your lip’s contours, then I’d say that the Rouge Allure Velvet is a lovely range to consider.

But if you want something that will not budge at all and stay put for hours on end, you may be better off looking elsewhere because these do fade – just not as quickly as a glossy lipstick.

Have you tried any of the Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet lipstick? Does the white cover grab your attention?

I’d say it is attention grabbing – but is it attention grabbing enough to pay an additional RM10 for the packaging? That’s something you’d have to consider 🙂
