I tried making this photograph last night but was foiled by a dodgy battery in my wireless remote, issues triggering the flash at any kind of range (I initially planned on using the 135mm but ended up at 35mm!) and eventually the driving rain. Very frustrating.
My second attempt proved far more successful mainly due to it being a pleasantly sunny morning. I still needed to restrict myself to 35mm though as I didn’t have any spare batteries for my remote. Anyway, a few minutes of popping the flash from various positions and then merging the layers with lighten or screen blending modes and this is the result.
The headlight bursts are actually from one of the shots from last night so at least it wasn’t a complete waste of time.
I think I’ve learned a bit about light placement from the many shots I had that lit the near side of the car from various angles and ranges. I think I’ll try again at some point to see what I can come up with without all the bursts in the background. I’d also like to take a look at the different results from using a bare 21cm reflector (As seen here) and a decent sized soft box.
Strobist:
Ranger A Head, B port at 7.5, 21cm reflector, multiple flashes from all around the car.
