Dollar Plunges to 4150 Colombian Peso

The US dollar tumbled to COP4,150 against Colombia’s peso on Tuesday, hitting its lowest level since September 2024, Reuters reported.

The sharp decline followed China’s retaliatory tariffs on US imports, reigniting fears of a global trade war and triggering volatility across emerging markets. Colombia’s currency opened at COP4,169, down COP29.56 from the previous day’s benchmark rate of COP4,198.56.

By mid-morning, the dollar traded at an average of COP4,152, nearing levels last seen five months ago. Analysts linked the peso’s surge to delayed US tariffs on Mexico and Canada, which eased regional uncertainty.

José Joaquín Prieto of BTG Pactual noted investors unwound defensive positions as markets stabilized. Oil prices slumped alongside the dollar, with US crude (WTI) falling 1.65% to $71.95 per barrel and Brent dropping 1% to $75.23.

China’s potential tariffs on US energy exports and OPEC+’s gradual production hikes exacerbated the sell-off. Kelvin Wong of Oanda warned Beijing could further weaken the yuan if trade tensions escalate.

Laura Bautista of Corficolombiana highlighted lingering risks, citing President Trump’s use of tariffs as a negotiation tactic. Markets remain braced for volatility, with temporary tariff pauses offering little long-term reassurance.

The peso’s gains reflect cautious optimism but underscore fragile investor sentiment amid geopolitical brinkmanship. Colombia’s central bank faces pressure to balance currency strength against export competitiveness.

While a stronger peso may curb inflation by lowering import costs, analysts stress prolonged trade disputes could derail the nation’s economic recovery.
